Umpiring

By that point my partner & I were tending to lean to each other at every free kick against the team and asking, "and what was THAT one for?"
To which the other would respond "that one's just for being a Swan."Comment

The umpiring was poor. We didnt get a 50/50 after quarter time. The Pain of Discipline is Nothing Like The Pain of DisappointmentComment

Get over it.....
The umpiring was as bad/good as it is week in, week out. There is no bias, the Swans are not targets, and no one is out to get you personally. It is all a figment of your minds due either to your own personal bias, or your complete stupidity with regard to your own personal understanding of the rules of the game (Like the moron who sits behind us in the Bradman stand).
This whinging, whining and crying is pathetic.
I'm sick of people blaming the umpires for everthying that happens in footy. To be honest, I thought they had a better run with the umpires on the day, but that is just part of the game and we move on. Some weeks the decisions go our way and some weeks they go against us. You all sound like a bunch of females with your bitching and complaining.

I would be interested if you you could tell me what weeks are the ones that go our way. I would say we are more times than not , on the wrong end of the free kick count.
The reason umpires are being blamed is that there are so many ridiculuous soft rules in the game these days that you cant scratch yourself without incurring a free kick. Strangely enough when we reach finals time, umpires seem to put the whistle away and the game flows and people love it. Why cant they do that during the season proper. The same rules still apply , its just the enforcement thereof that seems to change.Comment

You would be spot on there Mr Magoo, I can honestly say that since about midway through season 2005, after hearing Roosy in the media questioning the one sideness of the umpiring decisions after several games, i have made a conscience effort to find out the free kick count after every single game we have played in, whats interesting is that in all those game, around 100 of them, we have probably been on the positive side of the ledger in maybe a dozen of them at best. Dont know about you guys out there, but that does not sit right with me. The game on the wekend, 25-14 in favour of Richmond. I dont have a problem with the 25 paid for Richmond and I dont have a problem with the 14 paid to us, I have a problem with the 6-7 that were their for us and not paid.Comment

I would like to apologise for the gender mistake earlier. I should have known that a female would be the only rational person when talking about the umpiring.Comment

A lot of the males here are pretty rational when it comes to talking about umpiring.
You have to be careful with your generalisations when you're talking on line.Last edited by AnnieH; 5 May 2009, 05:04 PM.Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.

I don't have a problem with the free kick count. I think generally that reflects the style of game we play. I think the umps are on a hiding to nothing with the rule changes and changes in interpretation etc.
What I do have a problem with is the discrepancy in the way that the rules differ in how they are applied to Barry Hall as compared with others. A perfect example on Sunday when Hall got flattened in front of goal, as it turned out, one of our blokes roved it and we goaled anyway. But it was too high, in the back, you name it. Not 10 seconds later, a pretty soft free is awarded in front of goal for the Tigers. The other issue I have is that an umpire will stand and watch as Hall is held, pushed, niggled, grabbed, whilst play is at the other end, then the second he turns around to shove back, the little orange bloke is in like the light brigade. It's no wonder Hall flips out with that sort of management, and it's been going on since well before Staker got what was coming last year.Comment

I too thought the umpiring was somewhat substandard on Sunday - plenty of decisions that made you scratch your head. But thats the game these days really isn't it.
With regards to the free kick count normally going against the Swans, is it because of the intense, hard tackling, accountable style that the Swans have employed over the last few years? In aiming to choke opponents and force stoppages when not in possession, perhaps the Swans style of play leads umpires to be on the lookout for more (real or perceived) rule violations. Hence the often lopsided frees for vs frees against....
If thats the case I dont think we can complain too much as our style of play has worked pretty well for us over the last few years - even if it ain't the prettiest.Comment
