Is this the first schoolboy to debut in the seniors for the Swans?

I vividly remember you saying he wasn't ready. And he wasn't. He has improved significantly over the last 12 months.

My Dad's mate Robert Hay played for the Swans as a schoolboy in 1971. He was 16 and I'm pretty sure he is the youngest player to ever play for the club.

But it's not a myth though (about Sydney never playing youngsters in their first season). It's true that if a player is good enough in his first year, he'll be picked, but we've had a tendency over the years to pick players, particularly skinny kids, that take longer to develop (anyone remember 'Smoky' Davis and little Willo??)

I just take it as a sign that our drafting's improved...

Almost. He was still two months older than Harold Traynor who played in the early forties. Neither lasted beyond their teens.
It's very hard to live in a studio apartment in San Jose with a man who's learning to play violin. That's what she told the police when she handed them the empty revolver.

You may take into consideration that at that time playing footy wasn't considered a "real" job, so probably needed to get one.

Hanners is being managed by the club, his school and his family. Having watched him since preseason I can say his development is impressive. He handles himself really well, he is definitely quick between the ears, he kind of disappears at times until you realise something really good has happened, and he was the architect of it, and this will probably be his only taste of the game for this year. All the footy planets are aligned, he is due back home in Melbourne anyway, its still the middle of the year - not near exam time yet - still on holidays, had three weeks up here, and has been assessed as definitely not found wanting. So, why not! Its given us a kick!

A slight teenager in the old days of footy would have found it a lot tougher than now.

I saw Ditterich play his first game against Melb in about 63. I remember he was easily B.O G., and quite tall. But my memory is that he was still pretty skinny, nothing like the powerhouse he became. It would be great to see how he would debut with that body and that talent in 09.(he was 21 by the way!)
