I'm thinking of what we can give the opposition for a trade. Yes, there is always the chance that an uncontracted player goes into the pre-season draft and we grab him, but how often does that happen?

There's a few un-contracted players getting around.
They could walk into the pre-season draft.

But that rarely happens.... And I won't be a happy chappy if we trade away draft picks.
We do have some deadwood, I'd be happy trading, but obviously they wouldn't net us much.

We are losing the most exp'd forward line in the comp and have aN OLDER midfield to boot..

if we are going to spend up then we should be looking at a quality forward and midfielder worth about 400k each...

I'm a West Perth supporter so I see most of his games. He doesn't struggle at all, I have no idea who came up with that and how. He actually dominates the taps in most games.

For goodness sake lets get the most exciting young talent that we can get.

I remember when the Swans played really exciting attacking footy (mid 90's).

I'd love to go to the SCG and see the likes of a Rioli, Franklin, Leon Davis, Garry Ablett or a Stevie Johnson up forward.

When you have exceptional talent (like our Goodsey) its exciting to go to the footy, even if you loose more games (someone please tell Roosy that footy is an entertainment).

I also loved being able to reminisce about being at games when so-an'so took a speccie and kicked that goal ...

On that show on channel nine last night (I forget what it's called) someone stated that Roosy has spoken to either Ball or his Manager,Paul Connors.His ex coach,Thomas,said no way would he trade him particularily as before this years mid year break he was number one in a few of the Saints stats.I couldn't see Lukey untying his mothers apron strings and moving out of Victoria.

While I agree with your sentiment I'm not sure that the crowds will continue through leans years building up our "potential". It's been a real blast following the Dons and Dees this year not to mention the Tigers.

And unfortunately I reckon the only way we are going to see the likes of Rioli, Franklin, Leon Davis, Garry Ablett or a Stevie Johnson up forward is to trade for them, play against them or pray. Would have liked to have picked up Johnson when he was on the outer though....

No doubt Benny is in great form and will be again next season (partially due to his playing a shorter season this time around) problem is he is 31-we need to bring in some more youth rather than stock up on more players in the 28-32 group otherwise we will be in the same position list wise 2011-12.
The same argument can be applied to the rumour that Mark McVeigh is thinking about a Sydney move, he is good but 28 and we have a solid midfield, he basically does what his (younger and more talented) brother does

He would be 26/27 years next season I think he's a reasonable player to plug a hole in our team as a back up ruckman though I still believe his form in WC looked better than it was because he had Cox as 1st ruck.

My view that getting Selby and a quality mid field star like Luke Ball could represent probably a very exciting future for the Swans.

Selby will not be difficult to get, as he is presently having a bad run. But he is only 26 and a Premiership ruckman. In 2006 and 2007 he was viewed as nearly as good as teammate Cox. Also, remember how that other WA ruckman Michael Gardiner has this made a spectacular comeback.

Ball is a very very good player. He was number 2 draft in 2001, being probably the greatest draft list of all time. He is also only 26. As of last year, he had gathered a total of 30 Brownlow Medal votes. He might be hard to get. Yet I suspect that the Saints will have salary cap issues at the end of the season, and may not have much choice.

There was comment in this week's "Inside Football" of Brett Anderson that with White and Goodes in the forward line, the Swans' rebuilding period might be shorter than most people consider.

Now with that in mind, if the Swans got Seaby, he and Jolly play as ruck.

White plays tall full forward. With Henry Playfair coming back, Goodes playing in the forwards, and with Jared Moore, Craig Bird and Patrick Vespermi playing as small forwards, that's a forward line with great potential.

And ...how about Mike Pike playing tall full backback? There is also height in the defence with Lewis Robert-Thompson. Then, with quality defenders such as Craig Bolton, Shaw, Richards, Malceski (returning to his '07 form), and Mattner, it's not a bad backline .

If the Swans then gets a star midfield player such as Luke Ball, with McVeigh, O'Keefe, Jude Bolton and Kirk, you've got the potential of a fairly quality mid field. (Let's not also forgot the potentially very good Tim Schmidt coming back).

Finally you add the rising stars such as Daniel Hannebery, Nick Smith, Keiron Jack, Campbell Heath, as well as that unnamed No 7 Draft pick, (bearing in mind that last year's No 7 was Daniel Rich, in 2007 it was Rising Star winner Rhys Palmer, in 2006 it was Rising Star winnner Joel Selwood, in 2005 it was Paddy Ryder who has been a hero for the Bombers this season)

Seaby? Hack. Useless player. Who cares if he wins hitouts, he is useless around the ground. Why is even being mentioned. We already have Currie, Pyke. Plus we don't need two ruckman who's disposal is questionable. We need pace. Is there any quality aboriginals in this years draft. Must find fast players.
I'd go for Ball, Maguire, Top Forward, and Lake. Get a quality midfielder in the draft and thats it.

All very sensible sentiments about the current state of the Swan's list and rationale for my optimistic outlook. Salary cap space, decent youth (in my opinion) and an excellent well-funded football department. We'll be back soon enough - it's the Bloods for heavens sake (and I note Magic concurs).

We'd be more competitive with Cuz though.

I am not sure about that, Gardiner had a lot more potential than Seaby has.
