An actual trade target
I am surprised this hasn't been posted yet - then again it is based on fact and doesn't fall under the fantasy trade speculation most people here prefer to dwell on.
West Coast ruckman Seaby set to head to Sydney | PerthNow
If Seaby is out of contract and names Sydney as his preferred destination, I'd be surprised if West Coast played hard ball so we could get him for our third round pick. However the interest of Melbourne clubs could complicate things - I guess that's where the $1m comes in."As everyone knows our style of football is defensive and unattractive, and as such I have completely forgotten how to mark or kick over the years" - Brett Kirk

It's more about the fact that we need LRT in defence. LRT as a ruckman is OK, but it leaves us very short in defence. Seaby won't carry much value, if we could get him with a late pick (or even better, PSD), we'd be better for it.Officially on the Reid and Sumner bandwagon!Comment

Not sure I've seen this article posted earlier in the thread. Seems to suggest a 3rd rate ruckman isn't a priority in trade week.
While a really classy mid or two wouldn't go amiss, surely some of that extra run Roos refers to can reasonably be expected to be provided next year by Meredith and Smith and Bird and Hannebury? Maybe by Barlow or O'Dwyer? Malceski or Buchanan if (when) they recapture full fitness, confidence and form?Comment

we may end up with some out of form players from clubs in salary cap troubleYou don't ban those who supported your opponent, you make them wallow in their loserdom by covering your victory! You sit them in the front row. You give them a hat! Toby ZieglerComment

My understanding is it takes 4-5 pre seasons to get the fitness necessary to go through a season playing in midfield. Many of those guys will be very inconsistent. We would need two players who are fairly ready and some high draft picks

Suppose Roos and co do find a couple of 25 year olds for next to nothing. They will probably be crap, since no club is going to let a gun midfielder in their prime years leave without a decent trade. We play them, while Hannebury and Meredith and Smith run around in Canberra for another 3 seasons until they are deemed "fit enough"??Comment

Agree 150% with Liz.
And Jake Orreal has a way to go (back to the weights room Jako, more shoulders, more back, more arms, height ok). So another ruckman is not absolutely out of the question. And we could reprogramme him, couldn't we? Huh? Primmy
As with midfielders so with rucks. If we were to get Seaby, when would Currie get the opportunity to develop/play - in another 3 years'? Besides the qualities needed for a ruckman are changing, Leigh Matthews referred to the contest between Darren Jolly and Mitch Clarke (I think) as being the old style v the new style. Maybe Orreal doesn't need to become a Darren Jolly type.Last edited by rojo; 7 September 2009, 02:16 PM.Comment

Jake has come ahead leaps and bounds this year, and his final months growth in the game has been outstanding. Don't forget he was recruited a couple of years ago having never played the game! Snuck him in in a rarely used rule. But this kid is 6.10" in the old, straight up and down pole shape, but that's improving. He is never going to be a crumber or a wingman or come flying up from CHB, or CHF for that matter.
His ground work (from way up there) has improved immensely and so has his forward line awareness, been known to kick a goal or two. He has proved willing to go to ground for the ball, his tap rucking much better, his confidence has also been reset. But his size and shape and attributes make him a slow developing young man. It will take a bit of time. It has to by the laws of nature.
He will never be a Darren Jolly type, his body is not built that way. Think Spida Burton, but probably more flexible, and I think more talented. And better looking. He is a project player, it will be a couple more years yet before we see him as a required player. If you've never jumped from one couch to the other to save yourself from lava then you didn't have a childhoodComment
