That would be as bad a purchase as Club swans. The EQ is one of the biggest white elephant's in Sydney. Only surpassed by Olympic Park but with far less potential. The ridiculous amounts of rent that would be charged would make a club within this precinct just as unfeasible.
No, if the Swans want something that's going to create an alternate revenue stream as well as attract Swans members AND provide a base for supporters for pre and post game events, they need to think outside the square. Venues like tha Bat & Ball on Sth Dowling st (Which I believe is currently on the market) or the purchase of somewhere like the Taxi Club (Or even better, the Paddo RSL) are a far more attractive proposition and serve the purposes of the club and the fans far more than the current arrangements do.Last edited by reigning premier; 20 January 2010, 10:08 AM.Comment

I agree that Club Swans in its current format wouldn't survive at EQ. Way too big to support the lack of people.
However, a smaller social club would be perfect for EQ. Rents aren't actually that high there, it is the place where a large percentage of pre/post game crowds go, plenty of parking and walking distance to the SCG.Comment

That would just confirm the stereotype rival fans have of Swans supporters

TBH, dunno what the rents are. It would be an ideal location but I suspect there are a lot of encumbrences on any venue in that location.Depends how you look at it.

There's a parking station at the rear of the club. Street parking is hard to come by at the best of times in the Cross (it's within walking distance of the SCG if you're fit, and the walk would do you the world of good if you're not).
However, the club is very easy to get to by train for anyone on the Eastern Suburbs line - or any other line in Sydney for that matter - which is probably one of the main reasons it was renovated, and not relocated.
The renovations have turned what was a dowdy and run-down venue into something modern and classy, with a welcoming feel. You should check it out.Comment

The Bat & Ball would be a complete disaster. The traffic in the area is bad enough on match-day, and it's too far away from public transport to make it a genuine meeting place for all Swans members. It would only be suitable for local residents who can walk, and even then, it's not much of a venue.

The Taxi Club? LOL, we may as well buy the old medical practice in Taylor Square and do that up. Far too close for comfort - for everyone concerned - to the Oxford Street crowd.
Paddo RSL, again, although a nice venue, has the same problems as the Bat & Ball, and would really only suit the interests of locals who can walk.
Somewhere in Bondi Junction might work.Comment

I still remember the old days where the Swans had an allegiance with East Leagues Club, right in the heart of BJ. It was THE place to go to watch away games on a huge screen and amidst a mass of passionate fans. In some ways it was even preferable to travelling to away games, especially places like AAMI where you can feel pretty alone as a Swans fan. I lived in Cremorne Point at the time, so to get there was a ferry ride and then a longish bus ride or a train trip with a change. But I would still make my way there for pretty much every away game which I didn't actually travel to.
Then in 2000 I actually moved to Bondi Junction, and for 8 years lived less than 5 minutes walk from the club. Sadly the association between the Swans and Easts dissolved almost immediately after I moved.Comment

Yes, I remember going to Easts Leagues in the nineties and early noughties. Who knows, we might have to go back there if Club Swans goes under.I still remember the old days where the Swans had an allegiance with East Leagues Club, right in the heart of BJ. You eliminate venues that are 400m away from the gate for being too far away (Or too close to people that have a more balanced opinion on life than yourself), but then elect Bondi jct which is three suburbs away (further than the cross BTW)!! As for access to public transport, Bondi Jct is no better. Try getting from the SCG on a Sunday to bondi junction via public transport. Then you will know pain. The Bat & Ball would be a complete disaster.
