No more injured than Bradshaw and C Bolton, who seem to have made every list so far. Not being overly critical, because it's bloody hard, but he was in every team a few weeks ago, has played well since, and is now out of sight. Just an observation I guess.Comment

Really? For mine, McGlynn, nws his crappy disposal, has been way more impressive than Kennedy. Kennedy no cert for round 1 for mine.
Richards may well get a deserved reprieve up forward if Bradshaw not fit (as I think likely), but either way should be on the bench given his versatility and back up efforts to Reg & LRT last Saturday. That would leave your bench tall with the 2nd ruckman there too but still think that's how they'll go.
The membership dept may well be screaming for Rohan & Jetta to play, but agree with Liz that MOD has earnt his right for a round 1 spot.
I agree McGlynn's shown a bit more than Kennedy.
The only change I'd make from Team Liz is Rohan in for Richards. Richards has been good in the preseason but our defence is already solid and our weakness is up forward. Looks good on paper but is a work in progress. Rohan offers the X-factor.
Grundy Bolton Smith

My spies tell me that Bradshaw won't be ready by Round 1. I hope they are wrong...but if not.....

Jetta must play
No point having a game breaker if you don't play him. Jetta will win us games that are in the balance but he has to be out there to do it.McGlynn is unlucky but his delivery will hurt us as he gets the ball a lot then turns it over. Kennedy doesn't get the ball enough.DHL(hehehe) has got to be close to cracking it but is held out due to Bevan's form.

I think Richards is very relaibale and brave down back and his experience is invaluable. Jetta is an exciting prospect and sholud play. Nice to have options among our young players. Very encouraging for the future.SYDNEY SWANS.....THE GREATEST FOOTBALL CLUB IN LIVING MEMORY.Comment

Jetta has to play, he has played a whole season of senior footy in a league much stronger comp than the Canberra amateurs and tore it up. Pointless playing him in the ammos. The best way to develop him into the player we all hope he will be is to throw him in the deep end. He isn't going to learn anything playing in Canberra because he's been there done that in a superior league. Same goes for TDL. If either of them really struggle in the seniors then you drop them.

That was tough. Can't see where LRT will fit in to be honest. I guess he will be fighting with Teddy for the 3rd tall defenders spot. But I think Teddy is a better footballer. I'm dissapointed I couldn't fit O'Dwyer and Smith in. Although based on pre-season form O'Dwyer should probably get a game round 1 IMO. Couldn't fit Bevo in.
I think Mattner plays his best footy on a wing which is hopefully where he plays. White can do his apprenticeship under Bradshaw although I wouldn't be shocked if he goes past him during the season. I think Goodes will have a great season up forward.Last edited by Robbo; 3 March 2010, 04:38 PM.Comment

I just can't do it, I can't fit in every deserving player. This is such a turn around from previous years where we had no one amongst the younger players who you thought must be played.
TDL was in every team until now, Jetta is such an X factor he must play, we will play Seaby and Mumford, Mattner to a wing, Shaw into the midfield rotation, Bevo is doing a job, no I just can't put it together!
Does anyone know who the injured players really are and their likely return date?
When do the ressies first play?Comment

My view on McGlynn versus Kennedy is that McGlynn may have impressed more in patches in the first couple of games, but I think Kennedy does a lot of "little things" and really is just an absolutely phenomenal physical specimen with good footy smarts that I want to seem them get game time into (he's only 21, remember). I think with Bird out there is room for Kennedy (in the way that Bird was used last year) if it means carrying him a little.I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his timeComment

Putting aside the fact he's a pretty reliable performer (when fit, as he is now and was for the whole of last season), LRT's height wins him a spot before practically every other defender in our team. So many teams have a key forward who is around the 195cm height, or taller, and many will also play a ruckman down there too. Bolton, Grundy, Richards have no chance of competing in the air consistently with players that tall. LRT not only can, he usually does.Comment

I think this is still a very hard exercise, even having seen two games. But the chances of going in with one ruck if 4 are fit must be as close to zero as makes no difference. I also think that a backline comprising 4 players who are essentially half-back flankers won't work. Even though he isn't cemented in our best 22 yet, for balance I think you need a Nick Smith back there. Who else is going to play on Milne? Grundy's form has him as a definite starter but Richards too might squeeze his way onto the bench. I am not sure there is going to be a spot for all 4 of our taller defenders in every game this year but on merit, each has a decent claim on a spot. To accomodate a smaller defensive player, as well as at least three taller defensive players, a couple of the HBFers will need to move up the ground or rotate off the bench. I'd move Mattner into the midfield and have the other three rotating through there (ie one starts on the bench) unless Shaw can play a more defensive role down there than he did last year.
I don't know if he is quite in the best 22, but on pre-season games form, I think O'Dwyer deserves a spot. Ahead of Jetta/Rohan if necessary. Those two might be more certain longer term senior players but MOD deserves a chance to show what he's got and from his own admission, this is a make or break year from him. In terms of absolute contribution, as opposed to tantalising glimpses of the future, he has contributed more than either Rohan or Jetta in the two pre-season games (notwithstanding the fact that Jetta essentially won the Blues game for us).
Hannebery, Vez and maybe even Meredith could well force their way into best 22 contention as the season unfolds, but to date none has had a chance to stake their claim.
I don't therefore think that identifying our best 22 if all fit is really possible yet. But my shot at a 22 for round one based on team balance, who's had a chance to show something (and for older players, what we know they can do) would be somethng like
Grundy Bolton Smith
Malceski LRT Kennelly
Mattner Bolton McVeigh
Jack Goodes McGlynn
Bevan Bradshaw White
Seaby Kirk ROK
Shaw Richards Mumford MOD
I'd like to squeeze one or other of Jetta or Rohan in there but there doesn't seem to any room.
Cheers

We could drop Bevan back there, but it seems pretty clear that Bevan and the coaches are currently trying to reinvent him as a forward and I can't see them abandoning this within the next two weeks. Longer term I think Smith will be a midfielder but for now, small defender seems to be his best chance for senior action. He didn't have a great time on Milne at the weekend but he did some admirable jobs towards the end of last season. Unless they want to move Jack or McGlynn back, I don't see anyone else equipped to play on the small, quick forwards at the moment.Comment
