AFL Canberra Round 5: Tuggeranong v Reserves

    AFL Canberra Round 5
Tuggeranong Hawks v Sydney Swans Reserves
    Saturday 8th May 2pm
    Greenway Oval

    Ladder
    1st. Swans 4W 0L 135.2%
    6th. Tuggeranong 1W 3L 69.3%

    Last Round
    Reserves 18.10 (118) defeated Eastlake 17.9 (111)
    Tuggeranong 14.12 (96) defeated by Queanbeyan 20.130 (130)

The Reserves held off a fast finishing Eastlake in an enthralling final quarter while the Hawks faded in the 2nd half after a gallant first half effort against the Tigers.

    History
    2009
    R4 Tuggeranong 20.10 (130) defeated Reserves 18.9 (117)
    R9 Tuggeranong 15.16 (106) defeated Reserves 9.12 (66)
    R14 Reserves 27.12 (174) defeated Tuggeranong 15.13 (103)
    R18 Reserves 22.7 (139) defeated Tuggeranong 19.14 (128)

The Hawks only won 3 games in 2009, but significantly, 2 of those victories were at home against the Reserves.

    Team List
    • 8. Trent Dennis-Lane
    • 10. Daniel Currie
    • 11. Ed Barlow (senior emergency)
    • 13. Pat Veszpremi
    • 20. Sam Reid
    • 23. Lewis Johnston
    • 26. Henry Playfair
    • 28. Dylan McNeil
    • 35. Campbell Heath
    • 36. Chris McKaigue
    • 42. Paul Bevan (senior emergency)
    • 45. Nathan Gordon
    • 46. Taylor Gilchrist

    Scholarship Players
    • 48. Jackson Potter
    • Mitch May
    • Jay Lewis

    Top ups
    • Cameron Burdett (Queanbeyan)
    • Stephen Miekle (Belconnen)
    • Len Haddrill (Eastlake)
    • Daniel Dickerson (Eastlake)
    • Tom Sutton (Gungahlin)

    Ins: None
Outs: Meredith (knee) Pyke, Rohan (senior promotion) O'Dwyer (travelling emergency?)

4 big outs and no ins.

    Tuggeranong
The Hawks have been the cellar dwellars in the past couple of years and are in a rebuilding phase under new coach Glenn Gorman. They managed a stirring upset over Eastlake in Round 3 but have been soundly beaten in the other rounds. They are heavily reliant on their goalkicking forward Ashley Pocock, who was the only Hawk to make the AFL Canberra Team of the Year in 2009.

    Talking points
    • Who will step in the midfield beside McNeil now that both O'Dwyer and Rohan are out?
    • Can Dan Currie step into the number 1 ruck role, possibly supported by Sam Reid?
    • Where will Lewis Johnston play this week after a surprising, but impressive, run down back?
    • Can Pat Veszpremi get back into the coaches' good books after somewhat surprisingly missing out being named in the senior 25 man squad?
    • Can TDL bounce back after a very quiet outing last week?
    • Will Taylor Gilchrist get a shave?

    Prediction
The Reserves recent away record has been poor and their chances of improving that record won't be helped by the loss of players through injury, senior promotion and emergency contigency plans. With all due respect to Tuggeranong, the team will be somewhat grateful that they are facing the Hawks this week and not one of the heavyweights of the league.

Any RWO Canberrans going to this game? Any report, however small (or big ), would be greatly appreciated.

Any chance of getting a team/player list at the game in Tuggers tomorrow? ie: especially the toppies and their numbers seeing they will play a big part in the game. Good to see Jay Lewis travelling south after playing with the RAMS in Albury last week, and Mitch May outa Tathra.

I hear that Canberra members get an email containing the team but can't confirm. They like to give 47 onwards to the scholarship players. Eg potter has been wearing 48 and the toppies after that

If you could drop a few words about the game that would be terrific.

Thank you Ugg. Now, I need a bit of feedback on Mitch May. All I have up to now is "I heard that"......
Will be interesting to hear how 48 Jackson Potter is going. He did a couple of good things last week.

New mob of toppies will be interesting.

Meredith just can't get a break....perhaps I should reword that. The injury toll must be just doing that......taking a mental toll.
NOt surprised Patty wasn't named. He plays like a pea in a windtunnel. Sometimes pretty ok, and sometimes pretty bad, and sometimes I think he should take up another sport, like golf, that doesn't involve other players.....ok maybe I am being mean here, but.......
Can't wait to hear how LJ goes this week. He is my new bestboy.....him and Sam Reid.......

Sydney didn't intend to draft him intended to Draft Chris Johnson who broke down in tears when they told him, so they went for Gormann, lasted just two season IIRC.........
You don't ban those who supported your opponent, you make them wallow in their loserdom by covering your victory! You sit them in the front row. You give them a hat! Toby Ziegler

I went too, it was a shocking game....everyone looked bad, including Vesp, Playfair and Bevan. Perhaps it was the company they were keeping. I thought L Johnston was the only bright spark. My personal highlight was (?)TDL kicking the goal, then soaring over the fence behind the ball, should've been awarded a 9 pointer for that. ..... I would hate to be an umpire....why does anyone do it?

The really good part of the afternoon was the magnificent weather.
