You're right about that. We were woeful, but Collingwood weren't that great. They should have beaten us by 70 points. If they think they are premiership contenders after that well they need a reality check. At three quarter time a few more goals for us an we would have been back in it! Pity we didn't have the spine for it though

The difference between the 2 teams from what I could see sitting in my Living room was the pressure Collingwood players put on our players when we had the ball. They just would not give our players any time to dispose of it, the moment 1 of our boys got it, even if they're opponent was 15 metres away, the Collingwood player would just immediately close the gap and put pressure ont he kicker. That was the main difference I could see anyway.

Agree totally. Because of our one on one style, players dont attack a player with the ball if it isnt their man so the collingwood player who has gotten away from that player (ala heath shaw, obrien , swan etc ) is free to run riot while our players run away from him searching for where their man has run too.

Cant blame the backs too much as its difficult to defend one metre high worm burners hitting forwards on the lead but it is sad when the likes of Dawes , Brown and Jolly can show our forwards how to both lead and to position themselves in a one on one contest.

Midfield was slow and unaccountable in defence and sloppy , slow and poor in in decision making in attack. Other than McVeigh we lack someone who can really break a gaem open at this time. I thought Kirky looked slow for most of the night although I praise his heart for at least trying to get us back into the game, Bolton MIA and Jack, Kennedy , Bird and Hannebery all had ordinary nights. Hannebery looks to be playing injured and is possibly protecting his shoulders. Unfortunately there are not that many options in reserves other than maybe Meredith or Odwyer (didnt see his name mentioned in reserves report though). Bevan should go and while they didnt play badly I would consider dropping one of Mattner or Shaw when Kenneally is fit as there just isnt enough room for both of them if there not going to defend the leading spaces of the opposition. While I am all for rebounding defenders, you dont need four if they arent going to be terribly effective in defence.

The only ones who could hold their heads high are McGlynn, Mummy and Malceski in my opinion. Rohan shows his inexpereince a lot (as witnessed by his run, bounce effort their at one stage) but tries very hard and will be very good as he gains experience.

Forward line is not functioning well but isnt getting good delivery either but its an idictment on the tall forwards when McGlynn is the one looking most likely both on the lead and in a pack mark situation.

Pyke is fine against lesser teams but just cant cut the mustard against a team like Collingwood. I would love to know why Currie isnt given at least one game to show his wares, even against someone like Richmond (rather than throwing him to the fire against say Geelong).

            Two comments:

            1. you are absolutely right on our man-on-man defence - which leads to players running past the ball carrier searching for their opponent. On the other hand I think the Pies sweat on our handpass backwards until someone is in the position to go forwards by foot or run. Quite often our first instinct is to look backwards behind the play - but the pies run in waves in that direction and we kept turning it over as the last person had four players on him and no-one left to pass the ball to.

            2. if only it was worm burning passes. There were a number of those and good conversions from the pies - dawes a couple of times, leigh brown in the fourth quarter. But lots of times we were just badly positioned or too easily outpointed (cloke against grundy in the goal square, LRT against Jolly starting 2-3 metres behind). The reality is if the Pies had kicked straight we would have lost by the same sort of margin as against the dogs and cats. And our defence would have looked as bad as what our midfield did

Lots of criticism of the players and coach. But what about the crowd ? I think we were left wanting on Sat. night as well. I agree that ANZ saps the life out of the crowd but the team really needed us. Sometimes (at the SCG) when the team is in trouble, that mournful "Syyydneeeyy" rolling around the ground really seems to lift them. Who starts that anyway ? I think it has to be a group of strong voiced males and they weren't there vs C'wood.
I agree that it was a painful experience at the game, but it must be devestating for the players. They would not have gone out there with all those mistakes in mind. We all will lift for the Hawks !!

Its interesting that after 1/2 time both sides kicked 6.7 yet we played so badly and the maggots played so well. Maybe if we can sort out our structure and get selections right there is some hope.

No, we must lift before we play the hawks again later in the year! I assume you mean the tigers

Yep, we looked beaten 5 mins into it. Maybe our boys thought that all the big bravado talk in the press during the week would have the Pie players crapping their pants then when they quite obviously weren't, we did instead

What an insult to McGlynn, he was the only one that even looked like he deserved a point.

I think McGlynn and Melcho were pretty close. Watching the replay, Melcho did everything to repel attack after attack - he had a very good defensive game IMO - maybe his best ever as it wasn't cheap possession either. He had a lot of pressure.

I noticed it was quiet on Sat night and the cheer squad seemed fairly quiet. However, 5 minutes into the game and you could see the Swans hadn't turned up to play and by half time we were gone. Amazing how it was only 25 points at fulltime and we got closer than that.
