    Half time, Syd 4.4 v Mel 12.4

Yet BetFair has Sydney at only $5 to come back and win? Are we missing something or do they suspect the umpires are trying to tank the odds for financial gain?

We have been absolutely insipid so far. We did ok int he last 10 minutes of the quarter but put nothing on the scoreboard. Melbourne have been good, but its a lot easier to play well when you've got extra maggots playing on your team. The Umpiring has been truly disgraceful so far and is not helping, but we have also been utterly hopeless. McGlynn and Goodes are the only two that are winnign their respective battles imo.

Just hope we can limit the damage and try to make it respectable in the 2nd half. Sad way to celebrate a wonderful servants 250th game.

That last goal to Jamar was irritating but shows Pyke's inexperience. Marginally better in that quarter but still miles to go, and a few of our players still need to be using the ball much better. Still, it is educational to see who is able to dig in and really lift their game when the chips are down, and in that quarter, McGlynn (goal conversion aside) and Hanners were our real movers. Hanners, in particular, has shown some real class and persistance. Jetta, too, has played with an intensity we've not seen that often from him, and Jesse's going OK as well, given how the ball is coming down towards him.

How on earth was that a 50m penalty against McGlynn. He was in the contest and didn't touch the Melbourne player once the mark was taken. He didn't step over the mark.?????

We r missing any kind of cohesion. We r too slow, too old & too jaded! Last week we beat a team with plenty to play for. Today we can't beat a junior team! Pathetic really. O'Keefe needs to get into the midfield, he's been played forward again. Get Kirkie out of the midfield into the forwardline. Hannaberry to the centre. Jedda on one wing Kennedy the other. Benny McGlinn & O'Keefe changing H/Forward & RR. Got to try things

This is unwatchable. I've gone back to work and away from the TV.

The umpiring hasn't been good but even if I was umpiring the game we'd still be down by 40. We seem to have gone back a few weeks and are attempting to replicate the second half against the Tigers. Maybe we need to gee ourselves up and don't against the bad team. So we'll flog the Cats, Hawks, Freo and Dogs then lose to the Lions.

                Or maybe not.

By the way the central ump overruling the boundry ump on that out pon full when it was a mark to O'Keefe was illegal. The boundry ump has final say on boundry issues. That field ump was 40 metres away.

It has been ordinary all year. There is no consistency across weeks, but even worse there is no consistency throughout games. Like it would not suprise me at all to see the umpiring go all our way in the 2nd half (Hardly expecting it). Its almost like the umpires go out with prepositions about every team. I just want consistency and the rules applied the same each week, and it just does not happen.

Unfortunately not. The Central umpire makes the final call on all decisions - field, boundary and goal. The boundary and goal umpires only advise the field umpire who then makes the decision. He is not obliged to obey their suggestions, but will do unless he has very good reasons not too (closer to the play, for example). This is why the Field Umpire must direct the boundary to throw it in or signal the "all clear" to the goal umpire to stop play.
