and whats more is the GF replay is the ultimate test of both teams strength, mentally and physically. Far far better than a quick fix extra 5 each way.

However, you cannot just keep going with replay upon replay if (in the unlikely event) no-one manages to secure a win the second week around. It would still be a war (in AFL terms) - two huge battles in successive weeks and then extra time (they would never have a penalty shoot-out). That is about as big as it gets in sporting competitions.

There is a heap of pressure being put on the AFL now in regards to this rule, so I wouldn't be surprised if they changed it - but I hope they don't.

In another thread, somewhere around here, someone suggested they should give premiership medallions to all the players who played for that team during the season (which I think is a great idea - or alternatively, for normal GF years the club should have victory medals made for their entire playing list). However, this becomes more pertinent with changes to the two teams of Collingwood and St Kilda for next week. If a player misses next week through injury and their team gets up, I hope he is still involved on match day (victory stand, etc).
Demetriou said on the Footy show this morning that they were disinclined to change it but it would be discussed. lets hope there is a result in real time next week.

They can pick and choose as they see fit Prims.

They say the wobbles are in a better position - player fitness wise.

True....but everyone new the rules at the start of the season too. One of the biggest problems with this game is that the AFL constantly fiddle with the rules on all levels at any old time when it suits them. Dermie on SEN Melb said last night that our game is unique in that the season is not decided by a penalty shootout. Sure it would be exciting but AFL grand finals are a war of attrition and wars are never decided by penalty shootouts. If no one wins the battle you retreat, lick your wounds, bury the dead (Leon Davis) and get ready to charge in again. This is a tough sport, it should stay that way.

Agree... shame the brain dead idiots at the AFL didn't change this a long time ago. Grand Final day deserves a winner. How good would have extra time have been today?
