In terms of players like Mills, attempting to blackmail interstate clubs into not drafting them... I think that is pretty much a thing of the past. It also leaves a question mark over the players character.

Most players accept where ever they are drafted to...They just want to play AFL. It's then up to the club to make them want to stay.
This is what Chad Winguard said to GWS and it allowed him to stay in Adelaide!

It's not only in the media where he bangs on about his version of 'equalisation', he's also on the advisory committee for it.

Hopefully any changes don't effect the 2014 Draft RE : Heeney....

But I'll bet there will be changes for the 2015 Draft RE: Mills and Dunkley.
It would be extremely unfair if they; 1) did make any changes, and 2) made any changes in the next 4-5 years.

The Swans have invested millions of $ into the Academy. From what I recall the Swans and QBE are investing something like $1.5m p.a. whereas the AFL is investing about $700k p.a. The investment in NSW's goodwill by the Swans and their sponsor QBE over the last 20 years would be a complete waste if we didn't get some benefit from that. If this did happen then the AFL and/or the other clubs should refund us. Why should we fund a development program which all clubs reap the benefit on? This would be extremely unfair and I think that the AFL is smarter than this. It would also destroy the dreams of many young NSW kids to play with their idols thereby pushing them towards other sports.

GWS didnt make a fuss about wingard as they had so many 1st round picks availiable.

Im sure if they only had 1 pick, like the rest of us, they would have been a lot more aggresive about it.

GWS also never formally visited Wingard, it all took place during a brief phone call. I think it is fair to say that nobody expected him to be this good this quickly either.

The National Talent Manager of the AFL, Kevin Sheehan, was just on SEN talking to KB about Eddie's comment's RE the acadamies and basically laughed them off.

He fully explained how the current academy system works and how clubs have the right to bid on players the same as with the father-son rule and mentioned it is just the luck of ladder positioning that Sydney will be able to draft 'a likely top 5-er' with pick 16, 17, 18.

He also went into detail saying that currently only 11% of all AFL players are drafted from NSW/Qld combined and that the AFL is aiming for this to be 20% as soon as possible and that it definitely wouldn't be achievable without the development provided via the academies.

He may not exactly be Gillon McLachlan but it is still comforting to hear somebody with an official AFL role come out and vehemently defend the academies.

By the way, loving Andrew Pridham getting on the front foot on twitter and getting behind the club, very passionate man!

Didn't we all donate during the big drive when this was getting set up.

If the AFL mess around with it do the donations get refunded?

Good point CJK. The Swans Foundation also contributes significant funds. I believe that some of the very committed members of Blood Brothers have donated significant funds this way.

People are forgetting that any AFL club can take a NSW Scholarship player (as opposed to an Academy player) under the rules. You might recall that Roos tried to poach Perris but Perris wanted to play for the Swans. Perris could easily be on Melbournes list if he had wanted to be there. I would assume that the same would apply to Heeney, Davis and Mills. Maybe if Collingwood had more integrity, less convicted felons on their list and good player management they might be a chance to get any of those three players. You might find this info about the scholarship program interesting; User:The-Pope/NSW AFL scholarship program - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

I'd be interested to find out what the actual rules are on this. Anyone know of a website where this can be found?

If the AFL play with the Academy rules due to Eddies latest whinge I at least hope nothing gets done until after next year's draft with Mills as he sounds like a beauty! In saying that, it sounds like the club will be going on the front foot due to this latest rant which is positive. And finally, I see the u18 championships are on fox footy tomorrow but only division 1 games are being played. I still don't see the div 2 game on the guide next Wednesday as I said in an earlier post so I'm doubtful us Vic swans supporters will get a look at the NSW state boys and a couple of our future guns in action! Hopefully young Dunkley plays tomorrow and impresses!

The Queensland NSW U18 game is definitely scheduled to be televised on Fox.

I both hope and believe that if there are any changes to the academy rules they won't affect the next 2 drafts. Usually there is a transition period before changes take place. It would appear an act of jealousy if changes were made just because of the circumstances where we are in line to nab a couple of very promising players.

Since there are 4 clubs involved, including some powerful figures that will fight any changes, it won't be an easy task.

Eddie is a blight on the game. He's the most negative influence on footy and should be given a lifetime ban. Almost everything he does brings the game in disrepute. Each time he opens his mouth he brings the game down a little bit more. We should get Luis Suarez to bite Eddies' tongue and rip it out of his mouth.

Excellent as I am really looking forward to seeing that game. The foxtel guide app doesn't have it listed but I'm sure you would be right considering past years have always had the carnival games played at Etihad televised.

Fortunately we have a very powerful ally in Leigh Matthews, I can't see him letting anybody play around with the academies and I believe true AFL people will listen to Leigh before Eddy.

WHat I love about this is that it's all about players who haven't even been drafted. In that story Jon Ralph is already calling the 2015 draft order. The draft has an incredibly high failure rate, even among top tens, but Maguire has already declared it to be loaded in favour of NSW and Qld teams.

Then there's Eddie's bizarre reference to returning the game to Victoria. The Swans should go back to Lakeside?

And can't believe Josh Dunkley got a mention. FS is now a problem when the Swans benefit?

                                A Swan supporter made the following poignant comment on Bigfooty;

"Listen to the interview with Isaac Heeney on the AFL site. He openly says if not for the Academy, he wouldn't be at the level he is. In other words,Sydney aren't taking a player from anyone else. If Sydney wasn't funding the Academy, that player would simply not exist in the system, or would be a raw, late draft pick/rookie at best. The Academy rewards Sydney for their investment in growing the talent pool. We're not "stealing" top ranked players, because without the Academy, they wouldn't be top ranked players. If not for the Academy, he'd be a rookie pick, so we're basically taking a rookie pick with our first pick, but it's just a rookie we've been able to identify has talent and put a couple of years development into before we draft him."
