Can anyone tell me if my thoughts are correct - if we take a gamble and not nominate Abe Davis for a 2nd/3rd round pick he is then open to all clubs at any position in the draft as per any player outside an academy. Assuming he is not drafted, only then can we put him on the rookie list as a NSW zone selection?
How did we manage this with Lloyd Perris last year?

Apart from rookie-ing him we don't have to do anything except wait for to see if anyone will bid for him. If they do, then we'd have to use our next available pick if we believe he's good value there. If no one bids for him we have the right to nominate him with any of our picks.

Lloyd Perris was the last of the scholarship holders but now they are all Academy players, different rules.

Perris was Rookie Listed as the number 1 Rookie pick on our list. But if we nominated him as an Academy player beforehand. If another club had have pushed us on this we could have been forced to take him as our number 1 draft pick like Tom Mitchell as another team said they would take him as their first draft pick. I think Reggi is right though and Perris was a scholarship holder, the last one, and that is different. you could choose where they would go and nobody could touch them.

We can nominate Abe or Jack Hiscox as well as Heeney if we like but if someone decides to take them before our nominated round then we lose them. That is how I understand it but I may be wrong, Liz might know more. That is how father/son runs and Academy is a mirror of F/S. For instance to get Heeney we will have to nominate him as our first round pick. To get hiscox I'm sure we will have to nominate him as number two and if we decide to get Abe either 3 or 4. Hiscox is turning into a pretty good player and his speed is lightning. I would love to see a sprint between him and Jetts.

Then each club, in draft order and prior to the official trade period, can bid to commit their respective draft pick for a given academy player. The nominating club can then, when it's turn comes around next, either trump the bid by committing it's draft pick for that player or pass, in which case the bidding club must take the player with the pick it committed. If no club bids for a given nominated player, he can be taken as the final draft pick by that club. I am not sure if with there an option to rookie list a player that no one bids for.

Keep watching Wolfie, the current crop of 15s and 14s are the ones who've already spent four years in the Academy and made a real splash at the Albury carnival last year. The depth and overall team strength going to start appearing I'd say, rather than just one or two stars.

Re rookie listing, this is what the rules say:

Club Academy Player Rookie Pre-Selection
(i) (Subject to Rule 14.4(f)(ii),) where a Club Academy Player has been nominated (in accordance with Rule 14.4(d)(i)) and is not selected at a National Draft or Pre-Season Draft Selection Meeting, the Club with whom he is eligible as a Club Academy Player may include him on its Rookie List prior to the Rookie Draft Selection Meeting (in accordance with Rule 10.5.)

I think this is how Brandon Jack came to the Swans. (?)

It seems that if you nominate to add a player to your primary list, you are committed to take that player in the ND if no club bids for that player. The only way to pre-list a player on the rookie list is to skip the nomination for the primary list and take your chances that he gets through both the ND and PSD.

That is my understanding. Stands to reason. Otherwise we'd just nominate Heeney for the rookie list (and make it worth his while to accept) and stuff the whole bidding process. That is clearly not how the scheme is intended to work.

I read it that if we nominate a player for the ND and then no other club commits a pick for that player then we don't have to draft him in the ND, we can simply add him to our rookie list before the draft?

Swans Academy and player watch

The way I read it is slightly different to Ludwig:

1. A list of academy players eligible for the draft is released. This has already been done for this year with the following for the
Sydney Swans ? Abaina Davis (University NSW), Michael Dickson (University NSW), Jordan Foote (University NSW), Zachary Fyffe (North Shore), Isaac Heeney (NSW TAC Cup/Swans Reserves), Jack Hiscox (Sydney University), Vahid Roser (University NSW), Bradley Watson (Pennant Hills).

2. The Swans have to specify by 3 October which of those players it wishes to nominate to add to its primary list, before the Bidding Day on 6 October. (See AFL names academy players eligible for draft - AFL.com.au)

3. On the Bidding Day the Club is then committed to take the player/s nominated at picks commensurate with other clubs' bids, or by using its lowest pick/s if no other club has made a bid.

4. Academy players eligible for the draft on the list above who are not nominated by the Swans by 3 October, and therefore not subject to the bidding process, may then nominate for the national draft.

5. An Academy player who has nominated for the draft but has not been selected at either the National or Pre-Season drafts may then be selected by the Swans as a Rookie before the Rookie draft. That is, the Swans would get first right to Rookie list any of the eight eligible Academy players on this year's list IF the Swans had not nominated them for the Academy Bidding Day, AND the player/s had nominated for the National Draft AND the player/s had not been selected by any club in either the National Draft or Pre-Season Draft. I think this is the way Brandon Jack was rookie listed. Every other club had the opportunity to take him in the draft using any of their picks before the Swans got him as a rookie.
