And I'd say ROK was probably played forward as a replacement for Membrey/Nankervis as neither of them played.Twitter @cmdil

A little birdie at the Swans told me they were convinced the AFL was going to shaft them this year, so nice to see fat Eddie has been put back in his box - at least for now. Sure the war will continue and the Mills/Dunkley combo will have them desperate to cut us off at the knees next year.'Delicious' is a fun word to sayComment

The decision to not change it this year might have had something to do with the form of Darcy Moore and Eddie not wanting to pay any extra for him...the kid has been dominating!Twitter @cmdil

Not really clear why but sounds like it's too complicated for now, plus the league has other issues on its hands.
The league is still in the process of examining and testing potential new bidding systems, to ensure clubs pay a fair price for top-line players drafted from the northern academies or as father-son selections, but has run out of time to introduce anything new this year with its next working group meeting not scheduled until next month
No change to father-son bidding system for 2014The man who laughs has not yet heard the terrible newsComment

It is a very good thing in hindsight that the rules for the draft of academy players were tied to F/S.Comment

This wreaks of self serving McGuire making sure he gets Moore at a discount.
It's good for the Swans....
But to me it's just another example, ever since Gil has taken over, of McGuires growing influence over AFL house,.Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect... MTComment

This is great news! But it's not going to be as big a discount as many thought re: Moore as Collingwood will likely drop a spot or 2 more this week and have a top 10 pick anyway! Lol.Comment

Interesting story here re early arguments for the Swans Academy. Also like that in this story Heeney has now become a "top three talent". Won't be long till he is allegedly the top draft pick!
"Sydney would have completely withdrawn from the national draft and started recruiting exclusively from New South Wales under a radical proposal put to the AFL when the club was pushing for the establishment of the Swans' Academy more than nine years ago."

That's a good article by Quayle. It at least provides a modicum of background to the academy, pointing out that it's not about cherry picking the odd 16 or 17 year old, but rather a far broader investment into developing boys from age 11 onwards.Comment

That story re the Swans offering to pull out of the draft altogether has been reported before. I have heard both Roos and Ireland speak passionately about how important they thought the concept was.

I once played a Masters game with Brian Fletcher ( ex Rugby League player) and was amazed at how easily and confidently he picked the AFL game up. He held every mark and his running through the lines was incredible. It was his first game.
The Academy is picking up 11 year old Fletcher's and making these tough kids skilful.Comment
