I don't think we have a surplus of small men. Smithy is very good as a medium defender but he's not great on the very small, nippy forwards. It remains to be seen whether Uncle Byron's one on one defensive skills are good enough for that role, but he might have a chance to start his career as a back pocket who can also rebound. At reserves level he has looked very dangerous at times lurking around packs in the middle but he may be some way off being big enough to do that at senior level.
In any case, I am sure a spot could be found for Smith in the midfield if he ever became surplus to requirements in defence. He could certainly be a very good run-with player, but he knows how to find the ball too, and uses it very intelligently.Comment

I guess you are replying to my post about the "apparent emergence" of Summner. I would have thought Bird, Jack, Hanneberry, Summner and Smith who would come under the banner of Smalls was a pretty good group, but if I rephrase and use "midfield/small" then you can add Kennedy, ROK, Goodes and even Shaw who add the vesatility to the side. By the term "embarassment of smalls" I mean... how do you fit them all in. That's why I can't see Meredith and Moore being in the top 22 and Bolton in more of a support/top up role. Your point about Smith is very valid because even though he has been good on small forwards there is no doubt that the Swans set up is to always have an onball tagger and with Kirk gone Smith fits the bill.I don't think we have a surplus of small men. I watched Sumner play ressies last season and he ran hot and cold all year. There is a great deal more assurance in what I have seen him do this year. He is lighter, and he is getting to the right spots on time. Its like a switch has been clicked and he has had an "aha" moment. Something has fallen into place. We will see.
Smiffy is one of the best lockdown players in the game (like Kirky) nowadays, its just that people haven't really noticed yet (except in the AFL Prospects where I quote"The silent assassin of the competitoin, be afraid when he lines up on one of your guns" - in other words he is rated highly by the opposition for a good reason). We don't have another specialist lockdown so I would be surprised to see his role change at this stage. But one never knows......even Kirky kicked a few goals. However someone like Crouch made a complete career in a similar role that Smith plays now.If you've never jumped from one couch to the other to save yourself from lava then you didn't have a childhoodComment

It is very common for even the very best of players to suddenly hit a a wall when they reach a typical veteran age, whereupon their career long magnificant form turns to dust in an instant. I recall it happening for example to Gary Ablett Senior in about 1996. Fingers cross it will not happen to Jude in 2011.Comment

Well I miised last night's game because in the end I decided to attend the Chocolate Dance Party which was part of my weekend workshop. Spent most of the night dancing with ladies a bit younger than me so ALL IS/WAS WELL ! Only had to pump the wheels of the zimmer frame up once the whole night and thank God for that little seat that lets you have a sit down on the dance floor but keep the feet tapping in time with your dance partner!!
This morning (Sunday 9am) whilst going back to the workshop, I drove past Lakeside Oval and Jesse and L J (as best I could tell) were out on their lonesome running laps. Not another player or trainer in sight. It was 100% definately Jesse.
Will watch the game tonight on IQ.In memory of my little Staffy - Dicey, 17.06.2005 to 1.12.2011- I'll miss you mate.Comment

Had to quote myself as it wouldn't allow me to edit. Definately not L J. I forgot his hair was darker. No excuse as I watched the Intra match.
The other player with Jesse had very blonde hair and looked very similar in body shape to L J when he had the bleached hair.In memory of my little Staffy - Dicey, 17.06.2005 to 1.12.2011- I'll miss you mate.Comment
