Note to the new coach and coaching panel. Having a ruckman as the sub is a really bad call. The sub needs to be a runner / utility.
Still I'll take the two points. Some positives:
1. We should have won it
2. We go 2 points - I reckon in years past we would have lost
3. Bevo can go back to Canberra
4. There is plenty of improvement left
5. Our new game plan is more open and fun to watch (will it win finals?)
6. Reckon we will win out of the Vez / Everitt swap.
7. Thought Reid looked excellent today. So much potential.
Next week
1. Play Bird, see ya Bevo
2. Bring in another runner as the sub sorry to say for Seaby and Pyke, but Mumford and White is our ruck combo
Looks to me like the umpires are letting the contested packs go for much longer.
I got hammered on this site for suggesting White as a pinch hitter and playing Mumford all game...............ie no extra ruckman on the bench................well being 84-84 all showed that it is not completely obvious what will be the best way to go because we just played without doubt the fastest team in the comp........but I am still strong on NO second ruckman on the bench given the rule changes even more so on the big fields !!!"be tough, only when it gets tough"

I don't think there is room for both Reid and White in the forward line if Goodes is at CHF. One of them has to make way for another runner to be brought in. Or have White pinch hit in the ruck and drop Seaby, I thought we looked a bit tall today.Comment

DTL or TDL rolled his ankle apparently at training.
Reid is still 18 or 19 and its his second game. He is a unit, but its mostly bone with more muscle than last year but.....he is a keeper though.
I would have preferred to sub Garry. Bit like a chook today.

I think Melb had approx 340 disposals to 305 for the Swans which felt about right !"be tough, only when it gets tough"

Hope Andrejs keeps that standard up, I thought he showed quite a bit.Comment

Watching the replay - Jarrah's mark on Teddy. Bevan was in the hole and was running back. He pulled out of the contest - heard footsteps. Brining on Seaby at th 11 minute mark of the final quarter was insane. Anyone know what Melbourne did with their Sub?He had observed that people who did lie were, on the whole, more resourceful and ambitious and successful than people who did not lie.Comment

Pettard came on at 3/4 time, can't remember who he replaced though.Comment

What a way to start the season! To me it was both 2 points lost and 2 points gained as we were done I thought in that last quarter. Wasteful kicking really hurt both teams- we should have finished it as a contest in that 3rd quarter. Great to have footy back and it was a great day to be at the mcg.it was warm in the sun though- but I wasn't going to move as I was sitting right near a couple of very lovely young women
who were excellent company (lucky they were swans fans Hehe!) A bit of a 'meh' result but its 2 points more then we usually get in rd 1!"You get the feeling that like Monty Python's Black Knight, the Swans would regard amputation as merely a flesh wound."Comment

Mattner had a strong game as well as Everritt....................Grundy did well and Ted had the matchup from hell.........especially with their midfield bursting thru for passes on the lead left right and centre.................our backs overall did well"be tough, only when it gets tough"

Just back from the G. Add to the list of positives: we didn't lose, it is a 73 point improvement, it certainly wasn't boring.
I agree with Goodes' comment - and think it is a polite way of saying we were beaten in the midfield. With that consideration, the back six did pretty well, aided by Melbourne's inaccuracy. This was surprising because their field kicking was generally a class above ours, more accurate, not nearly as many hail marys.
Umps made some puzzling decisions, but it went both ways and I don't think it had much influence on the final score.
Our run and carry wasn't consistent, but when it happened, it was exciting and nearly successful in terms of points. Jetta and Rohan were outstanding in that department but made a couple of godawful clangers; I think they're still improving. Uncle also was hot and cold, needs more time and experience, certainly has the potential. Goodes was the shining light, with solid contributions from Smith, McGlynn, Ted, Mummy, Reid, Shaw, Jude (apart from a horrible attempt at a kick that ended in a Melbourne goal) and Seaby in his brief appearance. Also the occasional nice touch from White (including a good goal), Mattner, Everitt and Hannebery. He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team.
