The Reserves' travelling roadshow makes its 4th different stop in the past 4 NEAFL rounds. After matches in Canberra, Sydney and Newcastle the 2nds join the seniors on the trip up north to face the Brisbane Lions Reserves team at their ocassional home ground Coorparoo, located just a few kilometres east of the Gabba. The benefit of having both seniors and reserves travelling together is that one or more players do not have to be sacrificed completely as a travelling emergency, although it is likely one of the nominated emergencies will not play the full game.

The Swans dominated from start to finish, leading at every change and winning by a comfortable 50 points. Reserves coach Henry Playfair lauded his team for their tackling efforts. Livewire forward Trent Dennis-Lane finished with 6 hard-earned goals while Paul Bevan hit 3 during his resting spells up forward. Defender Campbell Heath shut down Ainslie's leading forward Ben Hughes to earn BOG honours ably support by onballer Bevan and half-back flanker Eugene Kruger.

In a rescheduled fixture, the Lions were slightly undermanned in having only 12 listed players, but the goalkicking prowess of tall forwards Patrick Karnezis and Aaron Cornelius kept them within reach of Labrador. Ex-Swan Amon Buchanan dominated in the midfield with 30-plus possessions, supported by fellow inside midfielder Ryan Harwood.

Everitt was the travelling emergency to Melbourne last week which explains why the listed number of players has increased by one this week. Parker will get a full game in the reserves, and I'd expect the same for LJ with Meredith or Moore the more likely emergency to be withdrawn during some stage of the game as a precaution for the seniors.

Talking points

• Johnston - Primarily, where will he be used? There are some dangerous Lions forwards (see below) that may cause issues for our undersized key defenders and Lewis may continue his defensive education playing on them. On the other hand, in the absence of our leading goalkickers TDL and Haren, marks and goals from Lewis would be more than handy in our forward 50.
• Heath - He had a very good game in Newcastle, just his 2nd game back from his injury and did incredibly well to keep Ben Hughes to just 1 goal. I'd expect him to be assigned to the dangerman Cornelius this week.
• White - Similar to Johnston's situation, but with White being only one of two realistic ruck options (sorry Nipper) it's more likely he'll play forward than back.
• Currie - At the beginning of the year was hardly getting any ruck time due to the presence of Pyke and Seaby in the ressies side, but with both not present for different reasons, he'll have to shoulder the bulk of the ruck work. He's not going to have it easy either with his primary opponent McCauley one of the Brisbane's most improved players this year.
• Bevan - Singled out by Playfair for his work both in the midfield and up forward. With Parker returning he may play more in the forwards than last week, perhaps with a defensive task on their half-back flankers Raines or Golby.

The Lions Reserves have struggled with injuries resulting in a number of close losses. However, their number of listed players swell to 14 this week with the return of ruckman McCauley being the most important. He showed plenty during his stint in the seniors and was unlucky to be squeezed for structural reasons. Teaming with the other BMac, McCulloch, their ruck duo will be a formidable challenge for Currie and White.

Buchanan and Harwood are their primary inside midfielders and will be joined by the return of Hawksley. It should be a good battle between their inside brigade and ours consisting of McNeil, Parker, Moore and Meredith. Outside run will be supplied by the likes of Dyson, Clarke and Harvey.

Golby and Raines have been playing off a half-back flank and both give their side plenty of run and carry. Giant Irishman McKeever has been filling in the ruck in the absence of McCauley but with his return from injury, should find himself lining up in defence on White or Johnston.

Up forward Cornelius has been in great form, having kicked 24 goals in 6 games at an average of 4 a game. Karnezis while also tall at 191cm, plays more as a half-forward flanker with plenty of tricks in his arsenal. He has been likened to a taller Steve Johnson and has 17 goals in 8 matches in the reserves this year. The resting ruckman could also cause problems as the B-Macs are listed at 202cm and 198cm.

Summary
A lot will depend on our midfielders, it is easily the strongest part of the side that will run out tomorrow. Moore, McNeil and Parker and clearance specialists and if they can win their fair share of the ball, feeding it to the runners Gordon, Sumner and Meredith, it should provide succour to our defenders who will have their hands full against the Lions' taller forwards. At first sight, losing TDL in the forward line looks to be a big blow, but there are still plenty of goalkicking players in the side with White, Johnston, Currie, Bevan and toppie Kane Murphy the main options and the majority of the midfielders being noted goalkickers as well.

Without Lynch, we're a bit lacking in key defenders. I'd play White in defence on the resting ruckman, following the ruckman into the middle when necessary. White has the preseasons under his belt to keep up defensively with a couple of skinny ruckmen and then do some ruck work.

Johnson up forward, he's done his time, the fact that he was played forward is an indicator that that's where the coaches want him. With White down back with Heath, McKaigue and Otten, and hopefully a dominant midfield, we should be able to handle their forwardline.

Wouldn't think they'd give Lynch a key defensive post anyway. I know he's bulked up a lot this past year but I still think he plays better as flanker. McKaigue would be next in line.
