They've made it pretty clear, whether you agree with them or not, that they don't think he's tackling and pressuring is good enough at the moment. They know he can kick big bags of goals, that is not the part of his game they are disputing. So yes, he could conceivably kick 18 goals on the weekend and not get selected.

I do acknowledge this, and I know that the forward press is the trendy tactic at the present time but surely we, a team struggling to kick goals, could give a guy who is kicking multiple goals in the reserves a chance to prove his worth. I just hate the fact that we might (still) be relying on LRT to kick goals on the weekend. I love the guy but come on, he's not a forward. Bring in the experts.

I think people (including myself at times) get carried away with the numbers being recorded by the Reserves players. There is such a gulf between the NEAFL and the AFL at the moment that the coaches need to assess performances on different criteria other than the raw data.

TDL is kicking goals in the Reserves and so he should at that level of football but to make the next step he has to get the other parts of his game right. At AFL level if he doesn't then he'll get found out pretty quickly.

I think all the Ressies watchers will tell you that he's definitely improving in that area. Remember he's still young and is going to be an important part of our next premiership side.

Just putting something in here as a thought. Is TDL the sort of guy you can put one-out in the square while everyone else does the press? Is he smart and evasive enough to be able to give us a target if we bomb it long over the top?

Quotes from Horse in the member email on Jettas inclusion.

With two talls returning in defence and two running players missing through injury, Longmire said he needed an injection of pace into the team on the vast AAMI Stadium surface, so Jetta and Parker have been recalled with Lewis Johnston and Andrejs Everitt making way.
?It is a big ground and you need that run,? he said.
?(Jetta?s) obviously got plenty of (pace) at his best and he played well there last year and we?re hopeful that he will be able to bring the same this week.

Horse has not convinced me that he has a sustainable plan for our forward and team structure. I don't agree TDL has been carried as a passenger in the games he has played for us. He played his role and is improving. More importantly, the role he can play is not played well by others got selected ahead of him. Sometimes you just puzzled ! When Horse justified the selection of Jetta after an average game in the ressie saying ?It is a big ground and you need that run,...(Jetta?s) obviously got plenty of (pace) at his best and he played well there last year and we?re hopeful that he will be able to bring the same this week." Hope that he is right but unfortunately it will be raining all day tomorrow at Adelaide!

                  I agree with you.

TDL proved himself when and where it counted in last year's EF against Carlton. He deserves to be given a regular spot in the seniors until he demonstrates he's not up to it.

Look at Jetta for God's sake - how has he managed to hold a regular spot for so long?

"Lewis Jetta had a relatively quiet game and I'll be very surprised if he makes it back for the Adelaide clash. He spent the first half playing off halfback where he was adequate but I thought he could have run and carried it a little more. In the second half, they placed him in the centre where he didn't particularly shine. He did spot up a few players on the lead which is a good sign as his ball use has been one of my major bugbears this year". Post 60 Ressies thread Ugg.

He didn't tear it apart like you'd expect he might, but I'm sure he was just playing his role as instructed.

His field kicking was glorious and although he looked like he could run and carry on multiple occasions yet elected to kick just appeared to me like playing to instructions.

It certainly wasn't a performance which demands they find a spot for him next week, but if their intention was to give him just a week off, especially against the manic pressure that Collingwood employ, then I don't think he hurt those chances of being recalled.
We all see it different and although Liz, ugg and myself nearly always see things fairly closely, we didn't see things the same on Jetta's game. It doesn't even mean I was correct, but let's not use terms like 'From all reports he was average at best' which has been thrown around a bit this week.

FWIW, I see no value in playing Jetta as sub this week. I've thought he was the perfect choice a few times this year, but not this week.

In hindsight it would not surprise if indeed the plan was always to give him last week off in a game which was always going to be a pressurefest and freshen him up for the wide open spaces of Footy Park in a game they expect to win.

Bevan the sub for me this week. Has the versatility to play forward and back if needed early and it is less likely this week that we will be looking for an impact player to come off the bench and give us something because we are in trouble.

Agreed! But then I'm a pretty much one-eyed TDL supporter.

He also disappointed the week after against the 'Dogs when he got closer attention. He was pretty average in his two appearances this year as well.

I haven't got an issue with him and I'm not too fussed either way but reading this thread, you'd think we had an all-time great running around in the reserves.

Agree on Jetta though, very lucky.

How people convenientlty forget that the game he had the week after when the Bulldogs paid close attention to him. If he can't do what is required by the coaches in the inferior quality reserves how is he going to do it in the seniors.

As for Jetta I believe he'd still be in reserves if it wasn't for the injuries and the big ground we're playing on. Selection is always about getting the right mix against the particular opponent you are facing and the ground you play on.

I argued with DrJ earlier in the year to give it a go, but I am now firmly in his camp (and yours it seems).
