Yes, I think we should go after the next likely #1 draft NBA pick. l'm sure playing an unknown sport for rookie pay on the other side of the world will be far more appealing than earning $20 million a year for playing the sport they love at home.
My opinion is objective truth in its purest form

It's not clear from the story how he came to hear about AFL, or why he thought it might be worth investigating further. Yet according to Cordy he's "busting" to get over here.

He apparently plays for the "Fort Lauderdale Fighting Squids Footy Club", his local team in the USAFL.

Was he directed to the Squids after meeting with Roos, or did someone from the Squids alert Roos to his potential?

How he found out about us or whether he was directed to us has zilch to do with his 'busting
to get here'. I'm sure he is excited..how it happened has no bearing on that. What is your point?

he is an athlete and he would be a killer defender if he has the time to learn the game let alone in the forwards

time is the critical issue as always with a convert

My "point" is nothing more sinister than simple curiosity. The US is awash with athletes who would be suitable for AFL. Why Alex Starling in particular? How did someone from his background find out, and develop an interest in, an unusual football code on the other side of the world?

Alex was identified by one of Roosy's stateside connections. He did some preliminary workouts in Florida with former US Revolution FF Matt Dainauski. I think Matt introduced Alex to the Squids.

I found a link from a scouting link which ranked his attributes as a drafting rank.

Anyway he looked to be two thirds of the way down, I presume too lowly ranked to have any chance of being drafted. Basketball is a very different sport though

Kobe would just keep trying to take shots from outside the 50.

It's ARF not AFL... I like it!

                              Starling?s startling move - NCAA.com

"ARF is more of a finesse sport where rugby is more strength. The rules are different. The playing field is different. More skills in ARF instead of outmuscling the other guy. Skills, endurance. Everything. But I have been through all that."

Guess we'll see him in July after he graduates. But I would think he has been given a training regime to get the aeobic fitness up. Those big Afro-Yanks excel in athletic / power sports, but their ability to combine that with endurance is unknown because most American sport stops every other minute for an ad break.
