Given he spent 3 years dominating the centre circle in the ressies, including captaining them to a flag, I'd be astounded if the coaches didn't already know that.

More a case of the fans who may have not seen his feats in the ressies now knowing he aint the one trick defensive pony that some may have pigeon holed him...

Some great points made about the sub! The more you think about it the more complex it becomes. The opposition must also be considered. There is also no guarantee the sub might be on in the first 5 minutes.Liz's point about the top 18 being on the field for the whole game is a good one and why Smith was a good sub is precisley as noted above. He is a top 18 player and can play for the full time. To me there is no easy solution to this rule unless you have worthy players who are not getting a run because the top 21 are playing well and no one deserves to be dropped. So Walsh , TDL, White could be the sub and could begin to meld with the team .I am glad I am not a Swans selector however as good arguments can be made for a number of players.I guess this is why we are unbeaten to date!

Hopefully we'll all get to see some more. Smooch will still be our best option for the real class small forwards of the comp like Rioli, Milne and Betts/Garland, but when the oppositions small goal sneak brigade hold no great fears (like if we were playing ourselves...lol), a run in the midfield with Rhyce looking after whoever may need looking after would suit me just fine...

Smith will be in the 21, he is one of our better players and has to be on the park. The sub will revolve as whoever the sub is has to be match fit in case someone breaks a leg in the second minute of the game. You just can't have someone who only plays one and a bit quarters every week

The sub should basically be either the last guy you would have picked in your 22 or a first 21 player working their way back from injury/illness (like Smith was). Deciding who is number 22 is very difficult at the moment but it would be Everitt for me. He is a good sub in that he is versatile enough to play back , wing or forward and he really is at about number 22 on the current list.

On a sidenote , sometimes you dont realise the impact some players have until you see stats (and sometime the reverse is the opposite) but on one of the shows last night on fox AFL channel they showed who has most metres gained in the comp and Malceski was second overall. Thats a pretty telling stat for an attacking halfback.

So team is LRT out , White in , Everitt sub. If malceski out then armstrong in.

I pretty much agree with all this..... Except sometimes 'player 22' might not be a suitable sub, particually players who play one key position, for example a fullback like Grundy.
As for teams in's and out's ...Totally agree with you.
                Out - LRT
                In - White
                Sub - Everitt

Roos said on OTC that the Swans rate Smith highly and would always be in their best 22. Clubs do not use their very best players as sub unless there are compelling reason. Last week the compelling reasons were we were playing a top side and he had missed 2 weeks, and they assessed that a full game first up against Hawthorn was not smart, but he was likely to play well for 1.5 quarters while fresh. Pretty good assessment to me. Clearly starts on the ground this week.

No change and Everitt for sub is my guess.

Why make Everitt sub he was ok last week. If Mal comes back I think he would be perfect as sub this week seeing he had a problem last week.

On Tuesday Mal ran well . and showed no knee discomfort at all but took no part in hands on training..Lewie had no contact either, and didn't seem 100% to my amateur eye.
