As much as I like Mike Pyke and greatly respect his transition from another country and another game, he could be very useful as trade bait (if we think we have that position covered by others?). Are we deep enough in the ruck stocks?

We need to develop a young ruck prospect. Either through the academy, or pick up one during the draft. Paramount for the future. Obviously mummy is gonna be our ruck for the next 5-8 years and if Horse is happy keeping seaby and pykey (and if they are happy playing second fiddle), then maybe it isnt paramount in drafting/developing a ruck prospect. I respect pykey so much. Would love for him to be number 1 at another club for his sake.
LRT. Lord Roberts-Thompson. He may look like the Munster, but looks can be deceiving.

Jamar is leading the league in tap outs so i thought it was a pretty good effort for the moose. He did beat jamar in the spread aswell.

Why would we throw all that development in Pyke out the door and trade him. He can easily play that 2nd ruck/forward role and No1 when Mummy needs a rest or is injured. While I don't know what the coaches are thinking I couldn't imagine that Pyke will be going anywhere.

Al that's just the sort of ridiculously sensible reply that has no place around here.....

Pykey stays. Mummy gets better and gets back the #1 mantle. Seabs' future will depend on whether our recruiters go after any young talls in the draft.....

I double checked, and the only mention of superstar was your post.

His stats speak for themselves on how he is going vs the rest of the rucks however.

Completely agree. With Seaby gone at the end of the year along with Everitt we will need Pykey. He is developing and trying and has a big engine. He fits.

No way should we be thinking of trading Mike! He is actually a good ruckman, and an increasingly better utility player, and they are not exactly thick on the ground. I agree that I doubt Seaby is another season here, and I hate to admit it, neither is White (lovely bloke he is, he is not a natural). We cannot rely on LRT for the long term, he is much older than he looks and one day in the next 3 years he will retire*. We do not have anyone I can think of in the ressies who can pinch hit as a rucky in the seniors.

That leaves us Mike Pyke. Fine by me.

                    * That does not by any means indicate that I think he should retire, I am just saying he is I think 29 and logic dictates.

I thought Mike was definitely beaten by Jamar in the ruck contests, which is fair enough because was beating most of the leagues rucks, but I thought Pike compensated with some good work around and on the ground.
His speed makes him the only real option we have (I think Seaby insufficiently athletic or quick), should we decide to adjust our new found forward structure from "1 key forward, 1 tall forward and 1 forward/ruck" to "1 key forward, 1 tall forward and 1 ruckman/forward".

I don't think he would have much value on the trade table. He would be a depth player for most clubs and is 28 years old. We might get a pick in the 40s or 50s, but it's worth more to keep himi.

One thing to bear in mind is that Pyke is now 28, as is Seaby. Mumford is our youngest specialist ruckman at 26. Pyke & Seabs will probably retire in the next few years and Mumford won't be able to keep going forever on his own.

Given the difficulty and time it takes to develop a ruckman, I think that it might be time to start thinking about it now, unless we intend to trade for a more mature ruckman as we did with Mumford & Seaby.

But Pyke definitely competed and that's all we could hope for and he had a bit more around the ground. Pass mark and keep him in. I wish I knew where to get hit outs to advantage stats....
My point was that even losing the hitouts, we still managed to win the clearances, meaning our inside mids flogged a down and out melbourne side. Jamar is a good ruckman, but it looked, on tv, like we got more value from Myke

Drafting and/or developing young ruckman is for the birds. We've managed to fail miserably in the past and there are not too many success stories across all clubs. They just take so bloody long to develop and are way too risky.

Much better to let them develop elsewhere and when we need one, hopefully not for many years yet, go and throw bucketloads of money at one and get him in.

The club showed its hand with Seaby during the last off season when it would appear that they could not even give him away - Pyke if he stays fit will only continue to get better with more games as the backup ruckman - we just have to look after "Mummy" better and not burn him out as much has been - if GWS can find a Giles out there we should be able to do the same
