I once tried aversion therapy, but I've been put off that.

A lot of people deal with anxiety by pretending it's not happening and being flippant about it. Or so I'm led to believe.

My doctor prescribed suppositories for my anxiety.

They didn't help at all, I may as well shoved them up my arse for all the good they did me...

I think when you have an anxiety disorder its hard to be flippant about it.

If you follow the Swans then there are plenty of times when you get anxiety attacks. Especially when there is a few minutes in a game.

From personal experience you can take a bucket full of anxiety medication and countless hours of meditation but if you stay in a place that's causing the issue then it is very difficult to recover.

The modern sensationalism of things by media goes a long way to causing anxiety in kids who then transfer this to adulthood. Recall the 80's and the constant talk of nuclear war.

I've been meditating for over 20 years. My approach is my body is my temple and have been on the look out for goddesses to pray at its alter. Damn still looking !!!!!

Has anyone seen the new Bruce Willis movie "Good day to get hard" I think its called. Heard its a real flop.

I think that's a bit of a premature evaluation there BillyRay.

Laughing at your anxiety or being flippant about it is a good way to help convince yourself that the problem you're anxious about really isn't that big a deal. Different people cope in different ways - the main thing is to find the way that suits you best and not be afraid to use it. I tend to use a combination of humour and looking at the outcome. Can I do anything to change it? If so, do it. If not, don't worry about it.

That's good, but this kind of cognitive-behavioural approach tends to have a very low success rate with people who have a lifelong condition, as appears to be the case for Mitch. They need something that goes deeper and gets to the heart of the fear that is driving it.

There are a range of different Anxiety Disorders; Generalized Anxietyr, Phobic, Panic, Agoraphobia, Obsessive Compulsive and Post traumatic Stress. Some of these conditions are a)cognitive; People feel they are threatened because of misinterpreted situations, b) Conditioning & Learning; This means the behavior was learned or the person was conditioned to react this way due to abuse or training by other people c)Biological Factors; This means the condition could he inherited or at least a Biological Brain condition. There is some new evidence that some Anxiety disorders are due to inhibition of neurotransmitters in the brain. In this case therapeutic drugs are needed to help the synapses in the brain work efficiently.

So as you see there are quite a few choices and the therapy is different in each case. I am surer Mitch and the club have this uder control and he will eventually get better no matter which variety of Anxiety he has been enduring. I sort of understand as I have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and if you look that up you might find that some of the symptoms can be very similar to Anxiety (except the elevated arousal I'm pretty certain that doesn't happen in Anxiety). But I find the anxiety, panic attacks and nightmares the worst.

He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

All I know is that if I was a parent of a player with anxiety or other issues, I'd be more happy about them playing with the Swans than any other team. I can't imagine that either the Eagles or the Tigers were particularly good for Mitch and I'd like to think the Swans have really been great for him so far and have hopefully helped Mitch a lot.

Yet another reason as to why we support the best team in the AFL.

There is very strong evidence, based on a great many studies over 40 years, that Transcendental Meditation is highly effective in the treatment of anxiety disorders of all kinds. The most recent work has been done with PTSD sufferers, and the results have been quite remarkable. I work professionally in the counselling field and I have seen these results first-hand. That is why I said earlier that I wish the club would suggest it to him.

hear hear. We're more advanced than cut and paste.

I think the way to go is to just develop your own yoga style http://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/hea...-1226603183822

Better keep Mitch away from that one. I like this quote:

Wearing nothing but the skimpiest of swimming trunks and a microphone, Bikram Choudhury won a legion of celebrity acolytes with his brand of ?'hot yoga?', which sees devotees exercise in temperatures up to 40C

Big Al, have I got a business proposition for you !!!! 40 Rolls Royces !!! Thats only 32 short of the great Bhagwan Shree Rashneej (Osho to you lot in the know) )
