Looks like the COL flap isn't going away

It's true, I live in a very small 2br terrace in Surry Hills, no parking, no aircon, no built ins, very tiny outdoor area taken up by a clothesline and it's just over $600 a week. The estimated value of this house is around $1m and it's a shoebox! My room just fits a queen size bed, a clothes rack and a chest of drawers. Surely there are similarly priced properties in Melbourne, but anecdotally I've had some friends move down to Melbourne and you definitely get more value for money down there. The COLA is obviously to help attract and retain interstate players who'll need it for the additional relocation and setup costs. GaahComment

I'm staggered that Carlton can be rewarded with players such as Kreuzer, Gibbs, Murphy etc for rorting the salary cap.
I'm staggered that so many powerhouse Melbourne based clubs get to play so many home and away games at the MCG.
I'm staggered that so many powerhouse Melbourne based clubs need to travel interstate so infrequently.
I'm staggered that Essendon and Collingwood have a monopoly on the ANZAC Day fixture.
I'm staggered that so many powerhouse Melbourne based clubs never have to play Geelong in Geelong.
I'm staggered that Richmond has had so many top ten draft picks in recent years and only been able to make the finals twice in the past 30 years.
I'm staggered that various former players of the Hawthorn Football Club still believe they should have won the 2012 Grand Final.
I'm staggered that the Grand Final must ALWAYS be played on the MCG, the home ground (or as good as) of so many powerhouse Melbourne based clubs.
They are propped up when they go broke with no hope of ever being a financially successful club ie; Western Bulldogs, Carlton, Richmond, Melbourne or North. The Saints are getting there again too.
There should only be 6 Victorian teams the state can no longer support 10. Clubs should be forced to merge, Richmond & Melbourne would be sensible but the two clubs hate each other. Western Bullies & Norf should merge and there is no reason why this could not be successful, they are both working class clubs and voth in the same area and they don't hate each other.Comment

Re: Looks like the COL flap isn't going away
If the reports that Sydney is 14% more expensive to live in are accurate then in real terms Carlton players are paid 4.2% more than their Sydney counterparts. Do I just send the Invoice attn: Chris Judd.?..And the Swans are the Premiers...The Ultimate Team...The Ultimate Warriors. They have overcome the highly fancied Hawks in brilliant style. Best Swans banner ever came after Carlton has raided us again and took Williams. (It was when the AFL was running that ad campaign around the theme of "I'd like to see that!" The Swan's banner read "Kernahan, Bradley, Motley, Silvani all under the salary cap - I'd like to see that!"
I think that banner, plus the one by Fitzroy that read "Courted by North, Raped by Brisbane, @@@@@@@*D by the AFL" led to banners having to be pre-OK'd by the AFL.Those who have the greatest power to hurt us are those we love.Comment

I agree with you plus the Victorian clubs are given the bulk of the development fund

Thank you Col Carter. About time some neutrals weighed in.
"We're not joining calls from other clubs that there be an audit. One of the clubs is saying Sydney should declare what it is paying all of its players to the rest of us I think that's all pretty silly stuff," Carter said."I don't have a problem with it (allowance) in principle,' he said.
"The whole thing was originally designed to reflect the fact that not only was Sydney more expensive, and demonstrably so, but actually also there was a stay-at-home issue when you're trying to create teams with people largely brought from other markets," he said. The man who laughs has not yet heard the terrible newsComment

I really think a bit of transparency would help the AFL and the Swans. As Liz says, the chart covers salary cap, veterans and COL without specifying any of them, which makes it close to meaningless.
This column by Andrew Ireland makes the case excellently. It's almost worth printing out or bookmarking on your phone just so you can show it to pub bores.

A major point of contention is the suggestion that we have ?stored? the COLA and used it to recruit players, such as Kurt Tippett. That is simply incorrect.
Every player contract at the Sydney Swans stipulates that the COLA must be paid in addition to the agreed contract figure. Every player has a manager, and every one of those managers is aware the Club has the COLA. The COLA is also added to the standard contracts of rookie listed players. Like all Clubs, each contract that is signed is reviewed by the AFLThe man who laughs has not yet heard the terrible newsComment

The On The Couch panel showed how stupid this whole argument is last night in about 2 minutes. They sarcastically commented that apparently you're not allowed to sign a player if you win a premiership. They then showed the graphic that outlined the salaries the traded and delisted players were on. I had no idea that Seaby and Moore were on as much as they were. Mike Sheehan showed yet again that he is one of the few Melbourne journos who is prepared to look at the bigger picture when it comes to the A in AFL and not be biased.Today's a draft of your epitaphComment
