My understanding is that it is the latter - but this is not news. It has been in the public domain for years.

It is still a "so what". The AFL gives all clubs varying levels of financial distribution according to their need. The argument is that the cost of compensating players for the additional COL is one that only the Swans (and now Giants) incur. Hence it is funded by the AFL.

The ranting and raving on that other site it pathetic to say the least, but you can't call it bitterness. No, it's all just reasonable discussion because they want a fair game. Fair as they see it, of course.

The fact that it's West Coast, Adelaide and Hawthorn supporters leading the way is no coincidence at all.

@@@@ 'em, so happy we got that cup!

I tried explaining that to a Hawthorn supporter yesterday.....to no avail.

Jealousy is an emotion that seemingly strips all reason and intelligence from a person. The idiocy surrounding this issue is breath taking.

That reminds me, I must watch the Grand Final again and taste their jealous tears which will taste like honeyed wine.

The refusal of some biased supporters of other clubs is frustrating but not surprising or unexpected. The continued deliberate peddling of lies and misinformation by Herald Sun journos and club presidents is inexcusable.

Crazy. The clubs are furious the AFL is doing what they agreed to.

"I've had a number of calls today from club presidents and CEOs relatively new to the game who weren't aware of the situation with the Sydney Swans - and some who have been around for a long time who had either forgotten or didn't read the fine print," McGuire said.

Neil Cordy just tweeted an article from 2009 where Paul Roos interviews Eddie Maguire and to boil it down, he's in favour of the COLA as he understood the challenge it was for the Swans and also how expensive it was and how essential it is for player to be located near the SCG.

It's getting embarrassing for some of these supposed professional CEO's, isn't it.

Now Tony Shepherd at GWS is calling Eddie out.

I can understand people asking questions about the Swans' allowance (even though few listen to the answers), but GWS?? Every club signed up for the GWS expansion three or four years back. Are they seriously wanting to welsh on this? Most likely the Pies, Blues and friends are staking some kind of ambit position (makes you nostalgic for the days when Collingwood and Carlton were enemies).

Must be the first time in RWO history where Eddie is the subject of 2 threads. This one and the Mitch Morton thread where he was discussed quite a bit.

Its strange isnt it. In most betting markets the swans are 3rd favourtie for the flag. This is unusual because we have proven we can do it (last year), play a finals style football, and have a great coaching records.
The only reason we arent favourite is because we dont have the best list on paper. Seems both West Coast, and Hawthorn and maybe even collingwood have better lists than us based on betting markets.

Which conclusivley proves, IMO, that even with the inclusion of Tippett, we cannot have used our COL allowance to build a superior list than those other mentioned teams which dont have a COL.

                          Dear Liz,
I think everyone here has the absolutely highest respects for your veracity. However on this occasion you may have spoken too soon, because it appears that it is news, and apparently I'm not the only one that was under a misapprehension

As for it being in the public domain, I've only spent an hour looking but been unable to locate the 2006 AFL Policy document. It didn't surprise me because AFL documentation (not to be confused with AFL publicity which is omnipresent) is very hard to find. I just hope it wasn't "on display" (as in "on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying 'Beware of The Leopard'.")

There's always a difference between public domain and public awareness but I would hate for the Swans pristine red and white plumage to suffer any dishevellment though a lack of transparancy at ALF house (precieved or real).

Smacks of mismanagement really. Might be time for Colless to go!

I don't have the time right now to scout through official AFL documents, but here is one article from 2009 that clearly describes the COLA as being funded by the AFL. Certainly I was previously aware this was the case, though I can't put my finger on exactly how or why I knew - other than by reading articles such as the one below.

No wonder there are misunderstandings. You could read that article and get the impression that the Swans could do anything they like with that money.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)
