to be fair i thought that GWS spread very very well in counter attack today but more impressive was they read the game in 5050s and spread on that too.

ROK, Macca, Kennedy had a little bit of trouble going with them off the mark. This slight advantage of the younger fast GWS players lead to fairly even inside 50s at 3qtr time

GWS will rise up nicely over the next two seasons

fairly scrappy - the Swans didnt adjust to the spread of GWS in the 3rd qtr nor in the first 15mins of the 2nd qtr

I felt that the Swans really got the rub of the green on the ump calls - i felt the scully tackle on Bolton was harsh and changed the game

Couple of things:

1. 17 contested marks - perhaps indicative of the number of bombs to packs in the game, but Mummy and Pyke were on fire. Also both stayed on the park over 90% of the game which is pretty amazing.

2. Keiran Jack should be in for a big year.

3. Jetta had more than a few cobwebs. To be honest it is pretty lucky scheduling for us to have (on paper) the easiest game first up.

4. Crowd was probably 50:50 or slightly more swans but GWS fans were far louder. Reflects how hard it is for fans to get excited in winning game you are expected to win easily. Won't be long before the game is genuinely tight (or shudder GWS win one).

From the swans GA area, it looked much more red and white, but was probably due to our location.
Scrappy Swans, wasn't a joy to watch at all. Probably not much noise from Swans cos the win was expected. Arrogant I know, but after last years showing it is only to be expected. Surely we'll get louder once they win a few. Hard to get involved when there's hardly anyone around lol

Mees think that we get to a handy lead and take the foot of the pedal and start crusing. Disappointed in our kicking to position and goal particualrly close we msut have missed as many as we won by so I suppose that is a least a good sign.

We weren't really able to play the same 'slingshot' style from last year, in part due to the Giants' pace, their kids are starting to read the game a lot better as already mentioned. That said this may not be an issue if Mumford and Pyke keep marking the ball in the forward line like they did yesterday!

Don't know if the Giants shut down Jetta or he just had a bad day. Just five touches. I guess other teams will make an effort to choke off the slingshot this year and try to create their own.

I thought our first quarter was the best - there were the fewest turnovers and poor choices. In the second half we made a lot of mistakes from tiredness. Kicking efficiency was 61% which tells the story.

Mummo looked trim and back in town after bad injury run last year. Kennedy got 24 contested possessions. Jack was hot. McGlynn was pretty sharp. Reid was good. So lots of good signs but we will need to play better against the Suns next week.

It's like a thoroughbred going through the motions, getting fitter with each race until they are at peak fitness for when it counts.

It may not look pretty at the moment but we are nowhere near our peak. Take the two and move on. I'm happy.

Round 1- Vs GWS

I'm out of town this weekend and wasn't that keen on going to the game anyway. Round 1 last year was hugely frustrating and I had the feeling this year would be much the same. I wasn't disappointed. Good run from the boys, comfortable win, take the points and look to improve next week. Nothing to get worried about, (remember how underdone ROK was in Rnd 1 last year? From that to a Norm Smith), but nothing too exciting either.

Also, Rampe did well, but someone needs to tell him not to overcommit to the tackle. A couple of times his man ran past him because he charged too quickly at them. The enthusiasm of youth!

It reminded me (to swap seasons) of the struggle to start the lawnmower after a winter doing nothing: splutter, roar, splutter, stop, pull the cord again, splutter etc.
The effort was there but the skills were lamentable. We will do better. We need to.
Having said that, a significant part of our problem was the new level achieved by GWS. They are quick, keen, and have a few skilled characters of their own. They'll upset some sides this year.

Having woken up I decided to watch the game. I can't watch it. It is unwatchable. The skills in this game are beyond bad and we won it seems to me despite ourselves - there were parts of this game where we were simply unable to do anything except hack it off a step. But rather than that occurring once or twice it was like 7-8 times in a row. Thank god for the draw, otherwise we'd have been stuffed.

Thankfully I know there is a lot of improvement there but I hope I don't have to watch too many games like this - it reminds me of the kick and hope of the 70s

Sure we have a good draw in the first 2 rounds, but if it was 2 top teams we were playing the preseason would have been adjusted accordingly to achieve a much higher fitness level. By the way GC were pretty good so this week we will need to go up a few levels.
