BTW the reason that North Melb in my opinion (who are as exciting to watch as any team when they are on) dont make the top 4 is predominantly because they back themself to execute week in week out briliant free flowing football - high risk high reward !!
the reality is that this works against half the comp and it struggles against the other half of the comp.........Longmire has always instilled in his players and us members / viewers the value of being able to handle momentum swings and the two easiest places to do that are in the either of the 50m arcs
North push ahead of their man when in attack and in large numbers which is what makes them look so brilliant in attack when free flowing
The opposite also is true ie on turnovers and pressure........when they dont execute they are miles behind their opposite number and look dreadful on a bad day.
This lack of understanding by Scotty keeps them where they are because it is simply to difficult to execute week in week out - this style of football is high risk !
Our style of football and kick long down the wings and forward 50m to contests (to a a Tippett) so our lads can push forward in numbers is by far the safest way to keep in a game - especially against the better teams. Yes we have added the sling shot brilliantly and did alot last year and most of the year until the recent games where teams have taken us head on with contested footy and flooded our red zone ie in and around Tippett.
field position is no 1 in my opinion for our lads so that we can move to these areas in numbers and apply brutal pressure on the ball and make goals. To have consistent field position you need to have clear lower pressure areas to focus the football towards - like we do
