Was it disallowed for contracts of players that signed/re-signed over the three years, or phased out from all contracts (existing and new)? The only way out of it for the AFL is if their contracts had a clause stating that the COLA may not be permanent etc. otherwise the league is in breach of contract

Just seen the story on Buddy's press conference on Sky News. There was some footage of Buddy enjoying Bondi Beach this afternoon!
He is going to love life at the Swans and be a pillar of the Bondi Beach Community.

Welcome Buddy. The Swans will embrace you. I had my doubts but obviously you wanted desperately to play with Goodsie. You also have business interests here and friends abound. Interesting he mentioned Tony A and Hannas as mates. Well we won't be getting rid of Smithy or anyone else for that matter. As cheesy as it sounded it made me all smug when he said in the interview on the swans website "I love the bloods culture" and said he wanted to play for "this beautiful club" I am in so much love..he swooned me! I need to go lay down,,Comment

More angst from the Giants about the Swans getting Franklin.
"Ultimately he chose to accept a nine year, $10 million contract from the Swans.
We would never have considered making such an offer. As the AFL noted, a nine year contract for a 26 year-old player is an extraordinary risk and one we would never entertain."
and:
"We strongly support the 9.8 per cent Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) for the Sydney clubs as there is no doubt that the cost of living in Sydney is significantly higher.
We would be extremely disappointed if recent deals offered by the Swans jeopardise the future of COLA and I have personally communicated this to departing Swans chairman Richard Colless."

They need to work on their own brand and figure out who and where they want to be. They have such a good young list that is going to go places in a few years time but off field they need a lot of work as they simply have no brand power thats why they cant attract marquee players. Need to organically build the club and settle down a bit. I think Kevin Sheedy set them back a fair few years tbh.Comment

I did not hear that particular part of Andrew Ireland's speech. I think clubs get carried away with theses early round picks and personally I reckon we already have enough talent there for the future.

I think people are jumping to conclusions regarding what Andrew Ireland said. He said that we don't need to move out any more players to cover the Franklin deal. (assuming Mummy and Jesse are gone). While that would appear to mean other trades (except for those which may be requested by TA or AE) are not being contemplated, he was making the point specifically regarding covering Franklin's arrival.Those who have the greatest power to hurt us are those we love.Comment

My guesses on the COLA, what might happen to it, and how they might be implemented...
I believe there is very likely to be some changes, if only to placate the baying Melbourne media and the other clubs. I doubt it will be completely removed because almost everyone acknowledges that it is difficult for a player on minimum, or not much above minimum, wage to live in Sydney. There is a reasonable argument that the COLA model should be applied to the Perth clubs too, or even something more complicated where Adelaide is the base case and everyone else gets some allowance relative to Adelaide.
I reckon it will move to a set amount per player, rather than a percentage allowance. Possibly it might only apply to those whose contract is under a certain amount, but I suspect it's just easier to apply a set dollar amount to all players on the list. As the value of a contract increases, that additional amount just becomes more irrelevant to a player's decision on where to play.
I very much doubt the AFL will just turn the tap off in one go. However pissed off they are at the Swans, deliberately forcing the club into salary caps issues is not in the competition's best interest.
I suspect their warnings to Sydney are more along the lines of "if we do make changes, don't expect that these will be phased in over the length of all your existing contracts if you are going to be silly enough to sign someone on a 9 year deal". So the Swans will be given, say, three years notice on the basis that this is sufficient time to change the way they project their salary cap distribution. They have to be able to manage the remaining 6 years of Buddy's contract in that context.
I stress again, these are just my guesses. It's just what seems reasonable and fair, if changes to the COLA are made.Comment
