Dermy echoing what some here have said http://www.news.com.au/sport/afl/der...1226730940537:

"If the Swans are a competitor (for Franklin), it makes me a little bit happy," GWS forwards coach Brereton told Fox Sports News on Tuesday.

"I think it's actually an irresponsible decision towards the Swans.

"If you've got (ex-Adelaide key forward) Kurt Tippett and Lance Franklin both in the same team taking up 25 per cent of your salary cap, you've only 75 per cent to pay the 36 other players.

"I can't see how you can maintain and keep the list in shape to make it to the top four year in and year out."

For those thinking that 1.1 mil a year over 10 years is crazy, I can guarantee that Buddy will bring much more than that to the club over the period of his contract. Andrew Ireland is nobody's fool.

As for the salary cap: There will be increases in the total cap for all teams moving forward, so this kind of payment will be far more common in a few years. There are already similar annual payments made to Judd, Ablett and Scully, so what's all the fuss about. Certainly Buddy is in this category. Furthermore, let's say Franklin breaks down after 5 years and is forced to retire due to injuries. What they will do is cancel the remaining part of his player contract and give him a new contract for the remaining years as a coach or something like that, so the cost will out of the cap.

If the AFL approve the contract they will not be able to take away the COLA for the next 10 years, at least for the portion that applies to Franklin. If there is an adjustment it will be gradual and will start some time in the future.

Now that the Swans will have their forward line sealed for the next 5 years, and the midfield is looking good and deep, we can limit the focus on not getting caught short in the backline. When you can focus on one area of the ground for long term development, it makes things a lot easier. I am sure there will be a backup of sorts to cover for Mummy.

Obviously our management knew there would be a lot of fallout concerning this deal, which is why I think the AFL and the Hawks management have been made aware of this for some time and we have received their tacit approval at worst. If Mummy goes to the Hawks, that will be a sign of a pre-arranged swap. If Reid goes as well, you can lock it in.

        and further:

The Swans consulted the leadership group late last year about the Franklin possibility. They gave it the OK. McVeigh and more so Goodesy have been in regular contact with Buddy whenever he visited Sydney throughout the year. The July catch up between Goodesy, Micky O and Buddy was the sealer to make it happen. The outside world thought it was just a meeting to discuss the Irish indigenous tour. Seriously, where were our recruitment and leadership staff educated....CIA? FBI? Another serious impressive coup!

Well, at least the debate about who we need more, Mummy or Jesse, is done and dusted.

McVeigh can plays anywhere so i have him on the bench for first few minutes of the game.

Membrey is kid is a gun and we hope will be the big mover for 2014.

This team would be a nice team for a rematch with freo next year.

Ireland just told 360 Goodes and leadership group didnt know until monday this week, and the 9 year 10million offer is legit. The club was approached by Pickering after we beat hawks in GF.

Andrew Ireland on afl 360 just said Goodes did not know about the deal when he denied knowledge last week. So no fibbing it seems. Longmire apparently told the leadership group yesterday who were fully supportive. Only about 7 or 8 people knew and it's been on the boil for 12 months since Pickering came knocking saying Franklin wanted to b at the Swans.
Patterns emerge, but do they mean anything? No.

The best 22 without Franklin is a beast of a football team. Add Franklin and the team takes on a scary scary look.

One thing Franklin will do is get the Membership register humming and the turnstiles ticking over very very briskly.

We will have done a risk analysis modelling expected career length, cap rises and future liabilities and contact requirements for other player.

I think it's smart in the context of an ever increasing salary cap. As the cap increases he's going to take a smaller portion each year with his 1.1m and then when he retires the last few years will pay out over twice as long, reducing the cap hit further.

This practice is considered beneficial enough that the NBA brought in a maximum contract length of five years.

We've just been the first to try it here. Out in front again.
This makes sense to me. When his playing time runs out, we pay him off at reduced rates on the never-never, perhaps in another capacity. Very smart work. I just hope the planners were as smart in figuring out how to minimise other issues, but if Buddy is as serious about this as he seems to be, perhaps we will be getting a mature player in more than one sense. I hope so.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

This is either revolutionary, game changing genius from two of the smartest operators in the AFL (Ireland and Beatson) or a dead set ball up. Wow, wow, wow. I still can't comprehend the absolute audaciousness of our club. It's nothing short of ruthless ambition. It would have been carefully planned out, meticulously assessed and kept within the smallest of circles to go this far without a leak.

The only intriguing part is who else will be leaving and what the AFL will think about the contractual components holding this all together.

And here I thought we were going to have a relatively quiet pre-season...
