I would test the waters with GWS although we're not in their good books at the moment
Offer Mumford, Grundy and our first pick for No 1 pick. They are seeking a ruckman and a key defender. If not good enough, well replace Grundy with one of our midfielders...Bird? Everitt?Comment

If Franklin went to Freo, everyone would be okay with it. He went home. He wants to be with his mate Wellingham. Whatever.
But there's such a hatred of Sydney coming out of the old Melbourne establishment. They want a national competition, but they're such a parochial lot. You'd think that Buddy had been abducted by Somalia War Lords the way they talk.
Just wait. Mick Malthouse won't complain about signing a free agent like Daisy Thomas. And Eddie will take his compo pick, no problem. But if we sign a star player, it's an outrage.
If only there was a no dickhead policy for Melbourne journos.Comment

No way they'd bite at that I feel as Grundy not worth much trade wise. We'd need to give up something significant and I reckon Reid would need to be in the mix plus Mummy and maybe even our first pick.
They desperately need some depth. They could probably trade our first pick (14) to Collingwood for Heath Shaw which would be decent business for them and us.
They could then use either their second pick (9) for a topline key defender and suddenly their team is looking a lot more solid...Comment

Agree.
Reid will either end up in the backline or be traded. I think it is likely that either Reid or Grundy will be another casualty of the Franklin deal. I would rather keep Reid, but we may not be able to afford his big contract. Hard to say as we don't have access to the numbers.Comment

I'd like us to make a play for Boyd as he is apparently an absolute gun in the making. Plus he'd be cheap in the first year or so

The permutations and combinations do my head in but Reid will have some serious trade currency. Plus the bundled value of Jesse and Mummy. I think Sam is on about $400K a year from memory of what was reported when he signed his 5 year dealComment

Check the Wazza Capper tweet and pic with him holding the cup with Buddy...priceless!

haha....boy, I'd like to see that! Not Eddie's heart attack...the look on his face when he hears the news!Comment

I see our strategy as exchanging a few high salary players for high draft picks that come in at a relatively low salary. The ones most like are White, Mumford, Reid and Lamb. I think we can save around a million a year by replacing these with 1st year players. There has to be some rationalising to get Buddy.Comment

As I said this free agency deal just blows the landscape open.
Despite us getting Buddy the fact remains that they need to trade for some serious talent and I believe we are probably one of few clubs prepared to give them what they need (i.e. a key forward in lieu of Boyd and a ruckman plus a decent draft pick).
They, in turn can give us a dream draft pick who we can develop into a star of the future, he is meant to be something else that kid. Plus we get some salary cap relief for a season or twoComment

I have a sneaking feeling Reid may be one of the players Ireland alluded to as possibly being traded out. You have to take most rumours with a pinch of salt but there was suggestion a few months back that he was homesick. There are several clubs desperate for a young (but not too young) key forward and the competition might mean he was worth more on the trade table than his actual output suggests he should be (notwithstanding his glimpses of potential). Carlton, WB and St Kilda are three clubs who ought to be in the market for a key forward, though he's possibly too similar type of player to Liam Jones to be top target for the Dogs.
I'd love to see him stay and maybe even move to defence, but it's hard to see room for him on the forward line. Unless of course, both Buddy and Goodsey effectively play as the tallest wing duo in history.
If Sammy does end up leaving, I hope it's because he genuinely wants to (and maybe it was this that tipped the Swans over into deciding they could put this deal together) rather than him getting forced out while not really wanting to go.Comment

I think it is totally plausible for those four to be aggregated into two first round draft picks somewhere.
Buddy plus three first round draft picks would be good business as well, though I'd still go for Boyd if we can get the number 1 pickComment
