Anyone worried about our ruck problems? Not now we have Derickx

I don't know what some people were expecting. We need to remember that Pyke is one of the best ruckmen in the league. He played every game last year. Was a leader in contested marks and was tied with Bellchambers with 28 for the most goals by a ruckman. Clearly the combination of Pyke and Tippett are the go for the ruck-forward rotation next year. We are not looking for someone to replace Pyke. We need someone who will play reserves footy most of the year and perhaps give Pyke a spell for a few games, or step up in case of injury. Now that sound like Tom Derickx to me. If he develops into a grade A ruckan under our tutelage, all the better, but not expecting too much. No ruckman in this draft is going to be a better backup than Tom for the 2014 season. He's had 3 years at an AFL club, so he knows the routine. We can reassess the ruck situation at the end of next season.Comment

Sounds like a low risk, low cost insurance policy. Quite likely to be on a one year contract at close to minimum wage. Tom gets the chance to prove he's worth sticking with, and provides a strong bodied back-up just in case. Means that they don't have to count on Tippett playing extensively in the ruck if Pyke does get injured, and reduces the reliance on LRT in that role too, given he is also our number on back-up tall defender with AJ on the comeback from long term injury.
It's said to be a shallow draft, so he also occupies a list spot for a year. If he doesn't show much, or if Naismith comes on quickly, his spot can be replaced in next year's draft if it looks to be a bit deeper.
Sounds like a no lose solution.Comment

Maybe the Swans also think GWS are likely to take Lobb at pick 14Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect... MTComment

I can't think of any suitable candidates (Jolly and Hille are crocked, and I doubt Seaby would be willing to move across the country again for a 1 year contract on minimum wage)Comment

Thank god we turned him into a ruckman cause he wouldn't have survived as a forward whisperer.Comment

I can only suggest that Taubert and our list management team see some value in this bloke. We're not into recruiting players not capable of playing first grade to the required standard. Does have the smell of being not our first choice though,
Guess it is low risk but I was really hoping for something akin to a like-for-like replacement for Mummy. Then again, I do not really think the two of them could have played together this season anyway so why have two decent earners when only one can play.
I'll trust the list management gurus - I guess the only consolation is we have a lot of part time ruck back up (KT, LRT, Goodesy even) and a young un that may come one strong.Comment

I highly doubt the club would risk such a bright KP prospect as Sammy Reid, but I daresay he'd be a pretty good part timer. His Leap and reach mean he'd get taps over many of the bigger guys out there, and his speed, endurance and ability below his knees Would make him effective when the ball is on the deck around stoppages. I'd like to see it, if just for a game to see how he'd go. Won't happen though.Comment

a little patience with sammy Reid will go along way
seriously Reid, Buddy and the Tip will be just so much fun to watch !
add in Goodes, Rohan etc being focal points also and it is potentially one of the most astounding forward lines i can think of !"be tough, only when it gets tough"
