I can't think of any suitable candidates (Jolly and Hille are crocked, and I doubt Seaby would be willing to move across the country again for a 1 year contract on minimum wage)
It was reported we asked Angus Kurtze (27 y/o ruckman from the SANFL) to train with us but he declined, Seaby had been mentioned (but as you say he'd be unlikely to move again for a minimum contract), possibly also Bart McCulloch.

The timing is curious - you couldn't see anyone else drafting Derickx - maybe you can offer 1 year if it is a free agency scenario.

Can't see it being any more than insurance (or a body to compete for a couple of games to rest Pyke). Derickx struggled for most of the year in the VFL apparently.

seriously Reid, Buddy and the Tip will be just so much fun to watch !

add in Goodes, Rohan etc being focal points also and it is potentially one of the most astounding forward lines i can think of !
Don't misunderstand me, I'm a huge Sammy fan and can't wait to see him play as a forward next year with Bud and Tip taking all the heat off him. Breakout year for Sammy ( as a forward IMO, not a defender). Just noting that if the need arose, he could potentially be the best back up to Pyke in the ruck, given his natural attributes and athleticism.

So, we have drafted a player who has struggled in the VFL, just cannot work this one out to be honest. At least Brown and Lobb played well in their leagues, not the bloke we have drafted.

I reckon we have him as insurance that we cannot draft our preferred picks and also to throw the other clubs off the scent, especially GWS. We may be prepared to draft Lobb or Brown in the 30s but are not prepared to give up our first round pick.

Still, he's cheap and presumably only on a one year contract. All will be revealed on Thursday and then we can enjoy the off-season

2013 AFL Draft predictions: who will your club select? | The New Daily

FWIW, Mr Spagnulo has predicted we will draft a project ruckman along with a key defender as two of our four picks.

I don't see this signing as insurance, I see it as a 'Quick, get a ruckman, any ruckman'... signing.

I fear you are right, it smacks of desperation. I thought West from Geelong was there for the taking but clearly our cupboard is pretty bare. Definitely hope w edraft one of the rucks

He played a few games in the ruck in his first year in the twos and dominated, including a BOG as the sole ruckman at the SCG one day. When he reaches his mid twenties and builds more muscle he could well be a more than handy forward come second ruck.

Just watched Stewie Dew interviewed on Swans TV. He says Naismith is now 205cm (6'8" for traditionalists).

                  In comparison:
                  Sandy 211cm
                  Cox 203cm
                  Tippett 202cm
                  P. Mitchell 201cm
                  Derickx 201cm
                  Jolly 200cm
                  Pyke 200cm
                  Mummo 198cm

                    Same height as Rory Lobb.

I am a bit late, but we gave up 2 draft picks for a VFL plodder Tom Walsh only a couple of trade periods ago.

I'm comfortable;e with our ruck stocks as they now stand.

Dedricxkxxzxxxx seemed pretty hungry and a nice fella on the swans video today.

Me too. We have two strong development rucks in Nankervis and Naismith who are probably a season away but could come good in 2014. Derrickxx is a long shot but has enough in him I reckon to at least play a few games and give Pyke a rest. And if all else fails we have some cover amongst LRT/KT/Reid in the very short term.

                              Some good information on nankervis

2013 Draft Profile: Toby Nankervis ? Bound for Glory News

His look very much like an ruckman/forward that has a big tank and will be used up forward and around the ground. Hard to move of the marking contest. Maybe we can use other swans taller ruckman at the centre bounces and nankervis around the ground like mummy old role.

I'm interested how they will keep all three ruckmen developing at the same time re game time. In fact it is hard to see how you'd get all three on the field though being NEAFL it probably doesn't matter.

Imagine that we could push Nankervis in a forward role and play Naismith as ruck but that stifles the ruck development of Nankervis.

Ideally we'd have on less ruckman - One first stringer, one genuine backup and one development/project player. We really missed out on that genuine backup (still not sure why we didn't trade for West from Geelong - maybe the $ were an issue) or brought Jolly back (perhaps moving to Sydney was not an option for him). It's all worked out in the end, kind of, and I think in the long run it will be a winner as we will hopefully have two very good ruckmen (Nankervis and Naismith) in a couple of seasons.

Are we able to loan Naismith back to the SFL with North Shore to give him game time if that becomes an issue?
