And they still consider themselves a so-called 'power-club.' Sheesh. Their supporter base is so weak they have to leech off Tasmania and slap a 'Tasmania' sticker on the front of their jumper as their 'sponsor.' We all saw who the Tasmanians REALLY supported when we played them at Aurora in 2012.
Even after all those zone premierships of the 1970s and 80s they STILL almost died in the 1990s.
'Power-club' be buggered. They're such phonies.Comment

They have 51,000 members on the early count where we had 20,000 members. Hawthorn averaged 38,000 people to their home games that is pretty good considering Aurora Stadium only holds 21,000 and they played four games at Aurora. They averaged 43,311 for away games making a total average of 40,865. They have the fourth highest home game total in the AFL, the fifth highest away game total and the fourth highest total. I think that makes them a pretty powerful club. They also had the second highest membership base last year after only Collingwood. Please check facts before running off at mouth becuase it may come ourt like dribble.Comment

Because I couldn't be bothered, I won't be checking into membership numbers and the like but it seems to me there are a few clubs ahead of Hawthorn in terms of membership numbers translating to bums on seats at the ground. If they were such a powerhouse they wouldn't be going to Tasmania cap in hand.
Anyway I'll admit to a negative bias here. I think their colours should only ever be associated with Royal Doulton products and not a footy club.Last edited by Big Al; 9 February 2014, 05:21 PM...And the Swans are the Premiers...The Ultimate Team...The Ultimate Warriors. a) There are 10 teams based in Victoria and the Hawks average home game attendances are largely boosted by opposition supporters. Do you really think all 71,000 of the supporters that showed up to the game versus Collingwood last year were ALL Hawks supporters?
b) Teams that aren't from Victoria (Or low-drawing teams like the bulldogs) are generally played at Aurora to lessen the chances of them getting found out for the overrated club that they are.
c) If the Hawks membership is so important, where are the 50,000 members when they're getting crowds of only 38,000?
d) Hawk 'AWAY' matches are also played in Melbourne. So that 'away' figure isn't that impressive.
e) Bare in mind, they have been an extremely successful club for the last 5 years on-field. This has a significant effect on the crowd figure at both home and away.
The swans on the other hand, DO NOT have 10 other Sydney teams to boost their home attendances. We have 1. Nor does the state have a tradition of membership.
I stand by my opinion that their club is most definitely not a powerhouse (At least in terms of supporters).

You should join them and buy a membership. A pet membership as well to boost the numbers a little.Last edited by bloodsbigot; 10 February 2014, 12:24 AM.Comment

Anyone who doesn't think hawthorn is a powerhouse in the league is kidding themselves.
Whether that is disappointing to you is really your problem and the snide remark is unbecoming.
And yes I've done that too.

Hi All,
I just wanted to give you an insight into why we don't have the member tally in a prominent place on the website.
A few years ago, we made a conscious decision to treat our members as valued supporters and as a key part of the Club, not just as a number. We have targets that we hope to reach (40,000 in 2014), but for us, it's important that the service we provide to those already on board is front of mind. For us, that means every member is a part of the team, rather than part of a tally.
We do however, display the current member number proudly in our office to those that need to see it most. The players and the footy department walk past it everyday and chase us up if they notice the board hasn't been updated for the day. They take a lot from knowing how many members are behind them.
You'll note we do share milestones in the member tally as we reach them in our social media channels. Best to follow @SwansSupport on twitter for the latest updates. I also take your feedback on board about wanting to stay up to date on how we're tracking and I will look to add the tally into the rotating image on the front page of the membership website in the coming week.
To give you all a further insight, we've currently got 27,754 members on board. That's about 2,000 ahead of where we were this time last year, so we're tracking well for another great year. We will have to work hard to reach the goal of 40,000 - so make sure you're encouraging your friends and family to join the team. Our current members and supporters are our best advocates for how great the Club is, so help us spread the word if you can!
Thanks all - looking forward to seeing a big crowd on Wednesday for the intra-Club match. Pop by the membership marquee and say hello if you get a chance!

Does it sound just the slightest bit as if there was some expectation that Buddy would be worth more than 2,000 extra members at this stage?
Just quietly I'd think the sort of people inspired by Buddy to join up would be more likely to sign up closer to the season itself, it's more the rusted on ones that renew as soon as they're asked.
I'd like to think the Swans viewed the 40k goal as more aspirational than achievable - otherwise I fear they may be disappointed.
As for "A few years ago, we made a conscious decision to treat our members as valued supporters and as a key part of the Club, not just as a number" . . . . . what a lovely thing to say.Comment

40,000 members is definitely achievable - it is more of a long-term goal and I think it will be achieved over the next 4 years. Membership is an important facet of a successful club as our support goes a way towards financial sustainability. Members will sign up, especially if there is a sustained period of real success ie Top 4 finishes. And then you have Basil Sellers who contributes hundreds of thousands of dollars to the club!Comment
