If they are going to get rid of it, which now seems inevitable (as an aside, this is kind of the AFL's equivalent of the Carbon Tax - an issue which has become bigger than it is based on deliberate misinformation because of a separate agenda by interested parties), then I hope they come up with some kind of "the COLA applies to all players being paid less than a certain amount" kind of clause. A clause like that should certainly apply to rookies and first year players, along with journeymen on low salaries.

I think you're both correct, younger/fringe players are going to be shafted by the loss of COLA, perhaps it should have been modified earlier so that it protected such players - unfortunately it's. the big money players that control the AFLPA and they had no intention of taking their snouts out of the trough.
Now however, it's a carbon tax issue. The allowance will be scrapped entirely - baby and bath water both.Comment

nah.... COLA will stay or some form of it
you cant ask miners to head off to the desert for the same pay as a cleaner in sydney........it aint going to happen as there is no extra reward
the reason a miner in WA recives $150k pa min is because of the risk and the remote location
equally you can not expect Sydney to be competitive in negotiation with players in states where it doesnt cost nearly as much to live........it is simply not fair and it will punish the AFL by leaving Sydney Swans dead in the water !
The Clubs HAVE NOT made a case at all on how we could possibly offer the same pay packet as say an adelaide club and win the player over.......we simply can not !!
all that is happening is the AFL are putting out a banquet of sour lollies leading into negotiation ........so that AndyD can tell the club CEO's and Chairman that you cant have it all your way that just wont work no matter how many of you try and gang up on the expansion clubs interstate of MELB, ADELAIDE AND PERTH !
very smart by the AFL and the journo's are spinning this wheel very hard"be tough, only when it gets tough"

WA don't get a COLA , they are the most expensive aren't they ? The COLA is outdated, and it wouldn't faze me if it goes. On these guys average wage I hardly think they can complain to much . We have a strong enough club and culture to attract players without the COLA. It will not kill our club to remove it, and it would end the cheats slur, which will echo for eternity if we win the flag while we still have it after our latest recruiting coup ( despite its lack of truth ).Comment

WA is not more expensive then Sydney to buy a house
MB you are right the COLA is outdated as Sydney proved that it should be more like 14% PA
two reasons the report was completed by the Sydney Swans is as follows:
1. it is fact that sydney is more then 10% pa more expensive to live in hence the signed off report
2. also we should not be penalised unfairly in a system such as the AFL, that is about making sure it is a true national game
No other club or journalist has proved that sydney is not more then 10% more expensive to live vs Melb as an example"be tough, only when it gets tough"

It's highly irrelevant for a profession where the average income is about 4 times that of the average worker. For rookies and draftees yes, for anyone earning more than double the national average income then I don't think it should be.Comment

MB we come from different angles
but I must say that i havent heard to many friends who earn $250k pa salary knock back a $25k pa pay rise ?
maybe only circumstance i can think of is when another company offers $50k pa more."be tough, only when it gets tough"

One thing I'd note is that while footballers are paid a lot, they're not paid a lot for very long. It's all well and good to spend a few years earning 250k but unless you know you're going to be a 10 year player or end up with a nice media career afterwards, you can't really plan ahead enough to take out much of a mortgage. Which is, of course, why most Swans players rent - even for an average Sydney player, the housing market is pretty prohibitive.Comment

Surely it's irrelevant what can be made in other professions. They earn what they earn because of the interest the game generates. The game can afford to pay the players big salaries.
It's about whether they can get the same salary elsewhere and live far more comfortably. If that's the case, then I think there's a pretty good argument for the COLA to stay.Bloods
