I have no probems with that, as long as they now cap football departments of clubs like collingwood. I cant wait until melbourne finally is reduced to 4 teams, that will be the day we truly have an afl comp.

Collingwood blues, Essendon Kangaroos, Melbourne Bulldogs and Tasmanian tigers.

Find it hard to see how they can strip it while it's included it current contracts. Won't the AFLPA have a problem with that?

Wouldnt they strip it as soon as the last of the current contracts expire?

          Considering that's 2022, I don't think so.

Notice fat head Eddie is leading the way. The only advantages he likes are advantages to Collingwood.

I think it would have to be. Unless there's some cute COLA get-out clause in contracts. But I confess I'm not greatly familiar with multi-year multi-million dollar contracts.

You'd think so, but there's always so much talk about them getting rid of it quickly.

I can't see how they could do it fairly before then.

Contracts are legally binding but it depends how they are worded whether COLA would continue to be paid, and if so who would fund it. If the AFL does cease paying COLA to the Swans it would be both fair and logical that they should phase it out, with existing contracts grandfathered so the relevant players continued to get the allowance, and it be funded by the AFL, until their current contracts expire. In principle though that would mean Franklin would get COLA funded by the AFL until the end of his 9 year deal. That would not be popular with many.

I would really like to see the title of this thread changed. Gonna be very tedious seeing such a negative statement looming in front of us every time we sign in.

The way I see it, we have 30,000 paid up members a month prior to season starting. Kind of Lockettesque isn't it. He will be worth his weight in popcorn with local publicity and awareness alone. I have no problem with that - that sort of publicity brings in members and awareness of the Swans. Worth it , no matter what.

And we all know that GWS know that too. Now they are just being narky.

                        I agree 100%!

It should be "Recruiting Lance Franklin a 'bad move', says GWS boss" or a disclaimer or something..its very misleading considering the context of the thread conversation.

The whole GWS trying to be narky just seems like a sheedy thing to do, trying really hard to create a rivalry by pissing us off field cause they sure are not doing it on the field!

How about "Recruiting Franklin a bad move (for the other clubs)"
Or a generic "Whine box" (or the goon bag) for all other club snipes, narks and whinges whether they be Franklin related or not

I believe in a previous response to the COLA question Gillon McLachlan used a term like 'phased out'. There was also something about giving a club the opportunity to do adequate planning. I don't think that any reduction in the COLA will affect existing contracts. I think this is why the Swans went a long way to lock up several important players, like Reid and JPK, for a number of years. I imagine this was done with the view that the COLA would be phased out on new contracts, but that players could not take a pay cut on an existing contractual arrangement.

In any case, it does seems that the COLA will be gone at some time in the future. A strong culture and a team that competes for premierships every year is going to become all that more important if we are to attract and retain players over the long term. That said, I can't see the AFL allowing the Swans to fall away like Brisbane has due to a lack of success and inadequate financing.

What I would like to see is a racial vilification tax on CEOs that can't keep there mouth shut.

Seems unfair on younger and fringe players to have to struggle (Spangher, Dre etc) due to the unique local challenges of sydney AFL. Players generally don't have many friends locally, are penalised if they want to get to and from work in a reasonable time (unlike their VIC counterparts bar St Kilda) and have to spend more than their VIC counterparts too. There will have to be some allowance for rookies and new players at least to be fair to all players (which should be the AFLPA's goal) so they're not disadvantaged by the club they end up at (surely another AFLPA goal)
