Given his seemingly low position, at present, on the Swans pecking order..And his poor showing last week as the sub....
If there is to be any selection consistency, then ROK should be dropped and a ruckman brought in.
Cunningham to be the sub.....And an astrix next to Hanners name, he needs to lift big time.Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect... MTComment

Hanners yea he does deserve an asterisk at the moment. He needs to lift.Comment

I don't know. ROK had 7 disposals in basically a qtr of footy. I think that's okay especially coming in cold in the last qtr. I still think we need his brain on field especially with no Jude Bolton there anymore.

Hard to explain why Hanners has been so down this year. His training reports have been good as usual, but all his games (including preseason) have been ordinary. Maybe he hasn't switched out of preseason yet.Comment

I think they will go with Jesse White! If Jesse produces a big 5 goal plus game and Franklin is held to less output, the press will be looking for blood!Comment

I think we need to bite the bullet on the ruck position and include one of the three who didn't play firsts on Saturday. It is simply unrealistic to imagine Pyke can ruck a whole game with help from the likes of LRT, who is no longer useful in that position. He can still be a useful defender but may not be ready anyway. Against a less experienced, although certainly talented, ruck like B Grundy I'd think about Naismith but probably go with Derickx; why else did we draft him in the first place? I'm assuming that Tippett won't be ready; if he is, he shares ruck.
Rohan needs to play, and in the firsts; I suspect that if he'd kicked that second goal there wouldn't be much talk about dropping him. And he is usually a good kick for goal.
Kieren comes in for ROK. Bird and Hannebery to take turns through the midfield and forward. I asked elsewhere, but did anyone see who was tagging Hanners on Saturday? Either they really did a job on him or he needs a dose of salts.
I don't think I'd change too much else, better to work on the structures. And the intensity.
These players were not good against Giants;
Hannas
LRT
Franklin (was held by two players every time he led for the ball no frees. Phil Davis had the cuddle on all day, I started to think he has a thing for Buddy)
Harry (very quiet 13 needs to be better than that)
ROK (when he came on he had the chance to really make an impact but too many of his disposals contributed to the problem)
Pyke (still not quite at match fitness. He got plenty of HO but around the ground he was way down)
Benny (for a mis 14 possessions is far too few. He did gert a few goals but in his forward role when resting).
I think it is laughable that Laidler, Rampe, Grundy, Jetta and Bird have been mentioned as possible outs because of bad form but none of those above have been mentioned. All of these guys managed to get more disposals than all of the other guys. I thought our back line did well. It was our forward line and mids that let us down. Our highest disposers were Parks., Joey & Shaw 23 & 22. Mitchell 21 & Macca 20. If you look at their averaged they were all well down on last year except Parker & Mitchell. Shaw was also up on his average and played really well. Even Mal was 4 disposals down.
This week we need to do several things.
1. Stop the bomb out of defence and into attack and start setting up attacking moves through fast leading attacking footy
2. Play players in the positions that best suit them
3. NEVER NEVER play LRT in the ruck again. It is even worse seeing he did no preseason work with the ruck coach.
4. Bring in help for Pykie. Even if Tippett comes in he will not be ready to ruck as yet. Of the players who played in the reserves, Derrickx will probably not play due to injury, Naismith was pretty good in the ruck and at the contested ball. Toby looks slow and cumbersome still, it may take a while for him to get the pace.
5. Dean Towers knows how to break the lines & was really good preseason and I think he played pretty well in a losing Twos against GWS.
6. We seem to be less fit than other sides, I remarked on this against the Eagles. We seemed puffed out at contests and against GWS we faded and most players could not raise a limp in the last half of the last quarter. I am a bit worried out fitness program is not quite good enough and needs to be ramped up.
7. Longmire please ask your players for lots of movement on the ground, around the ground, no standing still with hands on hips (probably due to not being fit enough).Comment

ROK's 7 disposals were really poor. Can't remember exactly, but including his 2 free kicks that he gave away, produced a number of turnovers that led to GWS scores.

I am going to suggest something out of left field. Aliir was really impressive in the Twos on the weekend. He played all his junior footy as a ruckman. He is a bit short for a modern day ruckman but has a great leap and is really mobile. He also has the other advantage of being able to go back and fill the hole. Some of his work against UWS was outstanding and he virtually held the defence together and initiated our attacks out of defence.Last edited by wolftone57; 23 March 2014, 12:42 PM.Comment

When Tippett returns, I think we will be forced to play him in the ruck at times. If his knee is problematic, then he shouldn't be playing. It's probably not the sort of knee injury that ruck work is going to affect anyway.
Until Pyke is fully match fit and Tippett returns, we will struggle a bit in the ruck, especially against 2 legit ruckmen, like Mummy and Giles. It was natural for Horse to think that despite this weakness we could beat the Giants, so playing LRT seemed a good choice at the time.
LRT is probably not a bad matchup for Jesse White if the Pies go with him as backup for Grundy.Comment

Many good observations and comments Wolf, but I can't agree on this one. I know LRT is not a ruckman, but he is there just to spell Pyke for a while and give a contest, which he does.
