    The Real Cost of Buddy?

According to Greg Baum (and some on this site):

    Swans missing Mummy
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

People are not taking into account how Buddy is growing the Swans brand. It's only two games in. There will be games this year when Franklin kicks 5 plus goals.

The membership numbers are growing due to Buddy's brand building efforts.

Matt we don't actually know this for a fact. It's only an assumption.

Let's discuss this again at round 14 when Mummy's body starts struggling with his style of play, which is phenomenal when on song, but when he tired in the last parts of the season, he was almost a liabilty.
Refer to his game against Hawthorn in the final.
Plenty hit outs. Only 3 disposals & Hale ran off him repeatedly going forward kicking goals.
At years end when we asses things, we won't have missed him as much as everyone is making out.

I noticed this also, each year at the Swans his best work was in the first 15 rounds...Then it's struggle street.

Mind you, if the Swans had managed his playing time better, instead of overworking him, this issue could of been avoided.

The Giants will find this out in due coarse if they keep playing him as their No.1 ruck, week in week out.
Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect... MT

Lets see how Pyke goes after 14 rounds in the ruck like a lot of others he was running on the spot at the end of the game - at least with Mumford we could play through him and he was effective below his feet and helped our midfield out - based on what we have seen of Pyke so far his goal kicking is still great but his field kicks hang in the air unless someone can get to him quick enough for him to hand ball off - that's confidence for you - I also don't expect to see him on the ground giving out a handball or helping the midfield out to create a spare man at the contest - we have lost a huge part of our game and given the efforts of our second ruck on the weekend our midfield will be in for a hard time this season.

Pyke was pretty much our best player on the weekend, the issue isn't with him , it's with having a suitable ruck partner who can compliment his game style.

So for a ruckman what is his game style - tap it and watch ?

Josh Kennedy said that he believes that Buddy is growing the membership numbers.

We also need to go back to the Monday after last year?s Grand Final, when the biggest story in the AFL was not the Hawks Premiership, but the Swans recruitment of Buddy.

Buddy had created expectation and excitement around the club, and people in Sydney want to talk about the Swans. People want to know what about his social life, his amazing on-field talent, and whether the Superstar is influencing the young ones (Hanners).

This is driving membership to the Swans and getting the Swans more media coverage in Sydney. Its Win Win!

Let's not go down the path of finding negatives about Mummy to make us feel better about losing him, that just aligns us with the Hawthorn flogs who have gone out of their way to invent theories why they are better off without Buddy.

Bottom line is we would be better off if we could have found a way for Mummy to stay, the same as Hawthorn would be better off if Buddy was still there. Whether it works out for us in the end remains to be seen and will be judged on whether we can snag a flag in the 'Buddy years'....

Mike has been doing a great job but his best position is a forward/back-up ruck. We need to develop Naismith as our No.1 ruckman. A potential mummy clone.

On the actual article, I thought this was one of the better lines written on the whole Buddy circus...

Franklin's inauguration has been steady rather than explosive, at least on the field. Against Collingwood on Saturday night, he had 16 possessions and featured in two gossip columns, both career averages.

                              I smiled...
