The Real Cost of Buddy?

Really nice to hear how positive Dane Rampe is in today's press conference video about Franklin's influence both on and off the field. I noticed when watching Saturday's replay that Franklin gives a lot of instructions to players around him on the field (and Cunningham also said how helpful Franklin had been to him on the field in an earlier video). Clearly Buddy is giving a lot of useful advice in team meetings as well and particularly in the 'heart-to-heart' the players had last week.Comment

Obviously that's why the team was playing poorly. They were listening to the advice of buddy instead of the coachReally nice to hear how positive Dane Rampe is in today's press conference video about Franklin's influence both on and off the field. What struck me about Buddy's departure from Hawthorn you could see he was genuinely liked. Not just as a star but as a good guy who contributed to the club. Plus, the fact that he was coming to live with his girlfriend was going to make him feel a bit more comfortable. The last year at the Hawks was probably tough on him, despite the GWS ruse, and long-distance relationships are challenging. So no surprise that he's playing really well and that he's really good team player. The man who laughs has not yet heard the terrible newsComment

I agree. I noted that comments by his Hawthorn ex team mates and their coach were all positive before our match against the Hawks and there were a lot of friendly exchanges between Hawthorn players and Buddy after the match. Also an affectionate tap on the back by Buddy to Josh Gibson as players left the field at half time. There seem to be some Hawthorn supporters carrying a grudge against Franklin but not their players or coach. What struck me about Buddy's departure from Hawthorn you could see he was genuinely liked. Most of my friends are Hawks and Tigers supporters (I live in the eastern suburbs of Melb). None of the Hawks supporters have any animosity towards Buddy. Buddy and Gibson are still very good friends.I agree. Good. I made the mistake of reading a Hawthorn thread on Big Footy a few weeks ago and there were some venomous comments about Buddy there. But venomous comments seem to be common amongst Big Footy contributors, and hopefully not typical of the general footy supporter.Comment

This says a lot about the Hawthorn football club. Some of their supporters may leave a bit to be desired (and I am sure some Swans fans do too) but the club as a whole never fails to handle itself with class. Like the Swans, they have benefitted from recruiting players (including very good players) into their team. Some might almost saying 'poaching'. The offshoot of that should be - and is in the Hawks' and Swans' cases -that they understand it is important to be gracious when players want to leave.I agree. It is an interesting contrast to Collingwood, who also have been pretty active poachers over the years yet still whinge endlessly when a player wants to leave them.Comment

The worst whingers it seems to me are the Crows. Comments about Gunston and Tippett, particularly by Crows supporters but also by the club itself, have been very nasty. They seem to think players have an obligation to commit themselves for life to the Crows and to living in Adelaide.Comment

I think there was animosity towards Tippett because the Crows put themselves in a compromising position to keep him on the list and it came out publicly. The sort of deal that the Crows put together to keep Tippett at the end of 2009 smacked of desperation and breached rules. The worst whingers it seems to me are the Crows. They should have taken Jesse White and the Swans first round pick.
Having said Josh Jenkins is emerging into a good player, demonstrating that people can move on from marriage break ups. The Adelaide fans should put all their energy behind Jenkins.Comment

I think the Crows have been pretty good about it. They've lost some great players to other clubs in the last three seasons. Admittedly they deserved some of it because of their salary cap breaches. Had Collingwood lost the same amount of talent Eddie would be knocking down the AFL doors demanding some sort of restitution. The worst whingers it seems to me are the Crows.
