It was interesting to hear Roos on 360 on Monday.
He was asked his take on the Swans at present....
He said they have the most talented list....A mumbled half mention of culture(one of those sentences he doesn't finish).
No mention of coaching, or developement, or players working hard etc.
Obviously still smarting over his departure.Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect... MTComment

I think it is more that being at Melbourne he cannot appear to be promSydney. Knows it is better for him to say nothing.
That said I expect he will continue coaching at Melbournenformquite anfewnyears yetYou don't ban those who supported your opponent, you make them wallow in their loserdom by covering your victory! You sit them in the front row. You give them a hat! Toby ZieglerComment

I don?t think he is smarting over his departure. The Swans would have kept him as senior coach long after 2010 if he wanted to continue. In 2009 he made the decision that he would like to step away as a senior coach as he felt that he needed a break from senior coaching.
The Swans then had him on a good arrangement to coach the Academy. The club made a decision that the Academy arrangement could not continue to pay him at the salary he earned in 2011-2013, due to budgeting constraints.
I think in the end Roos needed a new challenge and a change of scenery. Melbourne is my second team and you can see the difference that he is making. The Demons don?t have a winning record but they are edging closer to being a mid-table competitive team.
I believe in some way the Swans have done the right thing by the competition by pushing Roos out of his comfort zone. He is too talented to be an Academy Coach with a stint in the media.
He is now back in his element and together with Peter Jackson, will lift those Demons up.Comment

damn I keep looking for the like button. The whole issue (as I see it) with Roosy is that for us fans it is passion and for coaches and staff it is a business. We felt portrayed and he was doing his job (as coach of Melbourne). It hit a raw nerve with us re looking at our coaching staff and Perris. He also has a fine line to tread as coach and commentator!Comment

Just a quick summary of the team composition from last week:
National Draft over pick 20 ...........6
Rookie picks ................................6
Trades .........................................4
Top 20 pick .................................2
Delisted free agent ......................2
Free agent ..................................1
PSD ............................................1
I think the Bulldogs had around a half dozen top 20 picks in their side. With free agency, every team is going to have a couple of out of contract players looking for a better deal. There is certainly nothing that jumps out about how the Swans put together their list other than good recruiting and smart trading. It's ludicrous to point to the COLA as the villain.Comment

It is quite remarkable that our team that beat Geelong comprised 8 rookies, Jack, Grundy Smith, McGlynn, Rampe, Laidler, Cunningham and Lloyd as well as Derickx 63, Mal 64 and Birdie who was a scholarship player pick 59. That's half our team. To balance that we had 6 top 20 players if we are generous and include KT and Kennedy in that group. The 'mid' group are not too bad, it has to be said: Teddy, Hanners, Reid, Parks and Goodes.Comment

This has just been released resulting from today's equalisation meeting:
The AFL have released the major details on their competitive balance policy.
As predicted the AFL will take away Sydney and GWS's cost of living allowance as well as further compensation to smaller clubs.
The six key points are: (further details below)
1. A move toward a ?pure? salary cap
2. Increase payments to players
3. Greater control on football cost growth
4. Enhanced revenue sharing
5. Continue Supplemental / Discretionary funds
6. Stronger accountability and performance management

Details on the six key points:
Move toward a ?pure? salary cap ? phase out Cost of Living Allowance and Veterans Allowance by 2017 to move toward a more equitable salary cap for all Clubs; replace the current Cost of Living Allowance for the Sydney Swans and GWS Giants with a rental subsidy for each player on below average player payments. The rental subsidy to be paid direct to players by the AFL
Increase payments to players ? affordable increases in payments to players
Greater control on football cost growth ? curb industry football cost inflation through the introduction of a soft cap on non-player football expenditure. Clubs can continue to spend what they like on their football departments, but any spend over the soft cap will be subject to a luxury tax
Enhanced revenue sharing ? augment the existing Gate Levy by adjusting existing AFL Club distributions based on a measure of relative Club income for years 2015 and 2016; the reduction in AFL Club distributions to some clubs will be capped at $500,000 in 2015 and 2016 ? but note Clubs retain all revenue they generate themselves
Continue Supplemental / Discretionary funds ? compensate smaller clubs for structural inequities ? allocate uncommitted Club Future Fund monies to smaller Clubs
Stronger accountability and performance management ? help smaller Clubs which benefit from increased distributions from the AFL to improve performance, grow revenues and to be accountable for delivering on key targets.Comment

Full detail in attached statement. Takes a bit of digestion. Here is para re COLA:
PHASED REFORM OF THE COST OF LIVING ALLOWANCE (COLA)
? Abolish COLA in its current form for season 2017 for both the Sydney Swans and GWS Giants
? COLA to be transitioned down over 2015 and 2016, taking into account existing contractual obligations so as to not unfairly disadvantage either Club and their contracted players
? New fixed accommodation subsidy to be introduced for newly contracted players (from season 2015) below a salary threshold to be determined, that will be paid directly by the AFL.
