I too was disappointed with Rohan's output. I know the ball didn't go down his end frequently, but for someone who only had to run for 30 minutes, he didn't seem to be working that hard. When the ball was switched at one point, he was just jogging over to the other side - no effort to put a gap on his opponent or just work them into the ground. I think he is still coming back from his injury.

Stats suggest many people agree with me. 70 more possessions 6 more inside 50 s they are horrible

for me the biggest stat was Port 51 clearances to our 33 !!!!!......... watching the game it did feel like we were doing a reasonable amount more chasing....... so i would argue that unless we get our clearances back to 50/50 against the top teams in a finals type game, on a bigger field, we will be in trouble in my opinion.

The 17 centre clearances to 12 in favour of Port could have hurt us badly and I would argue that a Hawthorn at full strength would have made us pay with their better med to tall forward line.

other stats of note besides the scoreboard which I am massively happy with

        1. so we were 60 behind on disposals to Port yest yet we average the same amount of Disposals per game all season as Port do.........Yes we may have decided to play more direct and yes we had to make less disposals per point we scored BUT Ports clearances and 50 extra handballs could have destroyed any other back 6/7 players in the comp and we may have been a little lucky in the end yest unless we tried to play more behind the ball which allowed Port to run and handball even more ????

        2. Port had 25 more contested possessions then us yest even though we average 6 more contested possessions per game then Port this season

        3. Port had 30 more uncontested possessions then us yest.........they actually had 20more then their average and we were 10 down on average which some may argue would be because of us playing more direct vs Port running in numbers up the field with alot handballs

        4. Tackles we both had 81 each and both approx 10 above average for the season in yest game

          interestingly vs the SUNS

Sydney 31 to Suns 53 Hit outs

Sydney 38 to Suns 41 Clearances

Sydney 10 to Suns 16 Centre Clearances

So week to week we are seeing similar patterns with the Sydney scoreboard being ahead at the end of the final siren.......yet Sydneys clearance stats and hit outs and centre clearance stats appear to be absolutely aweful

You have to hazard a guess that we have an amazing ability to tackle that first player from opposition who obtains the clearance but then we force a turnover for our gain ?

          OR

Do we defend so well with numbers that when the ball comes in we deal with this area of the field and rebound better then the other 8 teams we have played the last 8 weeks ?

OR it appears we do both better then the opposition as well as convert more 6 pointers

          ..............

My last meditation is how many points would we put on the opposition if we won 50% or more of the clearances ????

could we win by 6 goals or more against the top teams - if both teams were at full strength ?

I was very happy with the result of this game and the players exceptional efforts to win it, however I was very unhappy with the strategies used ....

From where I was sitting, admittedly in the Trumper stand, it looked like the swans had been instructed to use the wings and not kick directly through the middle. I thought this was a very dodgy strategy at the SCG. I found all the fiddling in the corners very frustrating.... Isn't the idea to kick ASAP to one of the best goal kickers in the game?

If somebody can explain this strategy to me I'll be happy to admit I'm wrong..

And the umpiring was dreadful, Goodes and Buddy were being held and scragged throughout the game without any protection from the umpires...

Against a brilliantly athletic, running team team like Port you need to keep the ball pinned in one side of the field. If you go through the middle and are not precise they will kill you with their run into space and switching. Keeping them pinned on the boundary keeps them from effectively spreading their runners into space.

I've been saying for a while now that having Derickx instead of Pyke is about a 2 goal deficit for us. We will struggle to win clearances against most teams as long as Derickx plays. I would love to see us play Nanko in the seniors as I am nearly certain he would be the better backup option in the ruck.

If it's for Tom, I get the feeling that they are not confident in his fitness or the hammy to run out the game. Could you imagine if Pyke played and did the Hammy again? We would have to run out the game with Reid and Grundy rucking!
Fair enough point - whichever way (and it would obviously have been a risk going in too tall with the possibility of wet conditions) the Port ruckman gave poor old Tom a touch up like no one else has in recent weeks.

Just on Primmy's comments on Jetta. He seems to be staying at home on the wing a bit more. He is averaging around 17 stats (mostly kicks) but when he gets them he is usually on his own and he has kicked some really good clutch goals of late. Maybe that injury he had restricts him a bit so he is not running as fast as he was. In the Troy Luff Medal I have given him a vote or two in games, simply because of what he did for the team with pinpoint kicks to forwards and his high % disposal efficiency. Players can get a million stats but they are no good if they slaughter half of them. Also he is clearly bigger in the body which may affect his pace. I reckon he is doing a really valuable role for the team.

Not sure if this has been touched on - Channel 7 - ran two ads just after the last Port goal and missed the Reid punch, TV resumed with 1sec to go and Mal bringing it back in, then cut the telecast half way thru the Swan song - And don't start with the commentators,

Where were you watching? The Sydney telecast has the entire play after Port's last goal (about 15 secs).

What a wonderful game of footy that was. Port are well and truly worth the hype. What an incredible job Hinkley has done with them in a year and a half.

As for us, well this was definitely the game that showed once and for all why we recruited Franklin. I know some of the players were down a bit on numbers and efficiency but that's probably due to Port's pressure, so we need to credit them rather than bag our guys. Leaving out Pyke was the right call but Rohan as his replacement was the wrong one. It hung Gaz out to dry a bit bringing him in for this one. I hate to think what might have happened had we had an early injury. We definitely missed McGlynn on the day too.

So lucky the weather improved and it turned out to be such a perfect afternoon for footy. A win like that will bring everyone back again next time and, with the Giants being back in form, we should be in for a good game.

Yep, exactly. That's why we bunched them up so often. They spread and got away a few times, but our strategy cut off that option.

I found the same on my recording at the top of the mountains, picking up prime from the gong. I am guessing it was all regional then.
