Thanks to everyone who has been posting some of the wonderful contributions sane minded media people have been penning. I've not wanted to trawl through most of the media because I know there''ll be too much depressing stuff. But reading the arguments some have voiced has given me hope we may, as a country, yet get to a good place.

And some of those contributions have come from people on this forum too. Ludwig - your piece was fantastic. Annie - you nailed it with your comment on Adam holding a mirror to Australia. And Wardy, I too wanted to hug Robbo for his disgust at Alan Jones.

Your post is so well written and your analysis so thorough that it deserves a much wider audience than RWO. I hope you seriously consider posting this elsewhere in order to find a wider readership.

One of the things highlighted by your post is just how multi-layered and complex this matter is, and how difficult it is to fully analyze, let alone find any solutions to. We find ourselves in this situation because the social, historical and institutional analysis and discussion required to resolve the problem is relegated to academia and purposely kept away from the general public. It is left to the Alan Joneses of the world to set the agenda for what can and cannot be discussed. If one tries to delve further in a public forum they are quickly cut down and dismissed by using words like un-Australian, socialist or communist. There can be no questioning of historical context, nor the Australian institutions which are repeatedly labeled as democratic and egalitarian, lest we forget without these constant reminders.

We can precisely send a spacecraft 7 billion kilometers to Pluto, but after hundreds of years, we are just as far from finding a solution to racism as ever. Why are the situations so similar in every society one examines The poverty, the drug abuse, the deaths in police custody. I think I have to stop there, else this post will be labelled too political, off topic and sent to the RWO waste bin. I think RWO is great forum, but mirrors the wider society as to permissible discussion.

I like your suggested solutions for the players to take it upon themselves to show how they feel about the impact this has had on Adam Goodes. I think this may come to pass in some form. The San Diego Clippers and perhaps players on other NBA teams showed their displeasure with the racist remarks of former owner Donald Sterling, but I don't believe any games were cancelled (I could be wrong on this; I haven't checked).

It's hard to predict what the outcome will be in the short term, but I find it hard to be optimistic about anything constructive coming out of this, given the lack of progress of such a long period of time. The real sources of racism are hard to get to. There are many barriers and obstacles between us and them.

I've always liked Stan Grant as a journalist, but never really thought to look more into who he is as a person. I'd like to find out more about him, as that piece of writing about the Goodes situation and his own experience had a very similar impact on me when I read that wonderful article.

Actually, I suspect that you might have missed my quick explanation that I was pasting an article from today's edition of Crikey, by the brilliant Australian wordsmith, Guy Rundle. About the only credit that I can take, was the fact that I emailed the Crikey editor a couple of days ago and strongly suggested that Guy Rundle should be assigned to do a story on the Adam Goodes issue. The more egotistical side of my nature also feels that I can take a small amount of credit for Virginia Trioli's comments on ABC News Breakfast this morning. If you didn't see it, essentially she did a bit of a quick rant on why so many people seem mystified by where the booing was coming from, when it was patently obvious that the major cause was the long running media vendetta being run against Adam by people like Andrew Bolt. Which was pretty well the same line that I took in the email that I sent to ABC News Breakfast the previous morning.
Of course, it is a recurring tragedy of modern Australia, that a vindictive propagandist like Bolt has been installed into almost omnipresence, while if you want to read a journalist with a great grasp of history and a brilliant turn of phrase like Guy Rundle, then you have to pay a reasonably hefty subscription fee to the online journal, Crikey.
And finally, with the increasing number of people speaking out, I actually feel quite optimistic that some good will come from the saga.

I somehow missed that, but many thanks for the repost.

I had a thought after my last post and felt bad to have ended it so pessimistically. Then I recalled how quickly the country acted after the Port Arthur massacre, when our Prime Minister was so shocked that he took on much of his own constituency to enact gun control legislation. I hope this issue shocks enough people to take a similar kind of action. But it will not be stopping the people in the stands booing that will bring on change. It will take those who control the economy and our political leaders to act decisively if were are to make progress.

I've woken up to a kangas supporter friend posting some stuff about Goodes on FB. A link to a pretty reasonable article supporting what most on here have been saying, written by an American expat. And also a post saying he would give $100 to anyone who gives him a good reason to boo Adam Goodes. This made me a little happier. He's not the sort of person you'd expect this from. If this guy gets it, maybe some others are starting to see the light.

My daughter tried to explain to her 6 yr old footy mad son why Goodsey wasn't playing this w/e. He had already asked many times why Adam was being booed constantly but can't understand all that, so she said Adam was very sad about the booing and thought he would have a rest. My grandson was shocked. He said "He must be very, very sad because I could never be too sad to play footy".
