Fist his left knee and now his right knee. Are some people prone to this through their genes?

There will certainly be a genetic effect for some people. Ligaments are made mostly from a protein called collagen. We all have "collagen variants" - that is, the gene which encodes collagen comes in different forms. That results in collagen with different properties and I guess some forms are more prone to damage.

There seems to be some research into collagen genetics and ACL injury, but it's a bit inconclusive right now due to the small number of people studied.

Just for anyone with a degree in biology

Plus this article; 2016 in play for Swans' injury-cursed defender - AFL.com.au. It says 2016 is not out of the question for AJ! They'll be conservative for sure, but it looks like the surgery went well. Apparently his surgeon was 'rapt' with how it went.

I'm wrapped that he had it done by somebody who could spell rapt.

Poor bugger, fingers crossed - probably the most experienced player we have with less than 50 games.

Twitter just announced his knee is again infected and he may retire. Very sad news if true.

So unfair ????. Was hopeful it would be a success this time. This year hasn't been a good one for us.

So sad for AJ - I really hoped it would be right for him. Surely this must be the end of the road

The one solace he can take is that in less than 50 games, he got to experience what so many don't get near in a career. Not only that, but be an integral part of the team on the big day.

Such awful news yet again - he must have run over 10 black cats and walked under 15 ladders, all on the same black Friday.

I'm absolutely gutted for aj and if I feel like that then I hate to imagine how he is feeling. The tough thing is that retiring still doesn't solve the problem. He faces the prospect of now having the recent graft removed and quite probably having to live the rest of his life without and ACL. That is quite doable but will leave him unable to do many things that a young sporty gut would otherwise want to do.

To say what a shame is an understatement.

                          Poo. Just poo.

To think what he was and was going to be, and his last game looks like being the 2012 GF. I hope not, as he was a cracker, but gee that is utter s--t.

Now also reported on Swans' site, so unfortunately absolutely no doubt the report is accurate. Just shattering for Alex, very unfair.

Agree, what absolutely shattering news. The Herald Sun article mentioned that ......'the Swans are now seeking further medical advice on what to do with the talented young man ........ . '. Hopefully there is some new, revolutionary treatment out there or on the horizon that can get him past this.
