The swans no longer represent all of Sydney. Swans fans in the west can "go @@@@ themselves".
Representing the fans is a good look. It was an extensive experiment that isn't working. The vast majority of members, players and others within the industry have been voicing their concerns/hatred/dissapointment over ANZ etc for too long and it has been showing. Playing games out at homebush isn't gaining the club any more fans, it's no destination that people rave about.
Barry, feel free to correct this but:
a) you aren't a Swans member
b) you don't attend games at the SCG
c) you attend games at ANZ thanks entirely to your membership with that organisation
Is that your definition of a "Swans fan" and, if so, why should the Swans organisation give a damn what you think? In fact, you perfectly exemplify why the ANZ experiment should be terminated.

I think that is a harsh - or narrow - assessment of what it means to be a Swans fan. There are plenty of people who support the Swans in ways other than attending games, especially attending games at the SCG. Many can't (because they live somewhere other than Sydney or aren't mobile enough, or can't afford to). Others may prefer watching on TV. Some may rarely even watch games in any medium but still keep track of how the Swans are going, and in some way identify with the club. Everyone, in their own way, can be part of the Swans community even if they don't centre this around attending SCG games. And that's a necessity really, because if the only way to be part of the Swans community was to attend games (and specifically SCG games from 2017 onwards), we'd be a very limited community, size wise.
And this isn't just of emotional importance. It is of direct commercial importance to the club. Attracting sponsorship, for example, will rely on a much broader cross-section of the community recognising who major sponsors are, and of feeling some form of connection to the club. Even someone who might not really consider themselves to be a Swans fan yet is aware of the Swans' presence in Sydney and their contribution to the sporting and social communities might feel well-disposed towards companies like QBE who have shown themselves to be stable and loyal supporters of the Swans.
Doctor, I'm just curious, in what way do you think the SCG treat us as the "poor cousin of cricket"?
Not the drop in pitch. I love cricket too and would hate to see the SCG go that way. It's more about the renovations, the lack of consideration for grandstand naming, the lack of interest in upgrading our dressing rooms despite repeated requests, the access in and out of the ground, etc. We bring more people into the ground than cricket does now. The SCG would be stuffed without us and it's something they need to recognise and reward in my view.
Although it will be more inconvenient for us to get there (and costly as ANZ had free buses), I really have no issue with this. The main things I will miss is the more organised food catering - they still haven't got it sorted at the SCG.
I think part of the reason crowds dropped at ANZ was due to an indifference from people knowing they could generally have no issue getting a ticket/seat. With the smaller SCG, suddenly tickets/seats become more valuable, which in turn makes people more likely to secure them in advance - nobody wants to miss out. This then starts to build the hype again and fuel the demand further.
There is no better marketing tool than the "full house" sign on the front gate. ;-)

Drop in putches are a disgrace. Cricket is dying anyway. Rubbish sport
You don't ban those who supported your opponent, you make them wallow in their loserdom by covering your victory! You sit them in the front row. You give them a hat! Toby Ziegler

I'm fine with that. After all the majority of swans fans out west decided to buy GWS membership just to show good harmony despite GWS now screwing us. Meh they can have their corporate orange and grey lackeys for all i care.
The swans are not all of Sydney but the inner city, that I can live with TBH. We tried out west but the reception was meh.
Yes, the AFL has brainwashed fans into thinking they passion is measured in the amount of money extracted from them. Passion comes from the heart.
The swans are leaving me, not the other way around.
Mate you sponsor a corporation called ANZ and then you have a go at AFL fans for the same thing. I would rather my money and heart go to a club that i love and a club that is now part of me and that gives back than a friggen corporate institution that its only existence is to make money any way possible and if that means robbing their customers so be it.

Kiwi?
I agree. A decade ago i would have not missed a game, the past 5 years i have watched a total of 2 test matches. I islike T20 as its fast food cricket and ODI are just so boring and predicable. The game is devoid of any characters, players are not picked randomly no more and the only way to get into the aussie side is through contracts, the players now are just interested in seeing how hard and far out of the ground they can hit it and well just having to listen to heals, tubs, slats and warnie makes my skin crawl.

Thats a stupid, overemotional response.
The AFL is a corporate institution just as much as ANZ is.

What unsubstantiated bull@@@@. You are justifying your position on lies.

Well said Doc. I would suspect the The Swans games are the largest single income stream for the SCG. Therefore we should have been in a good bargaining position with them this time around. I would suspect that having Richard Colless as a trustee of the SCG made negotiations a little easier. I believe that some of the previous management of the SCG were difficult to deal with.
