Major SCG announcement today

I am just saying they have been based in the same area for 33 years, the eastern suburbs of Sydney. As much as we think they represent the whole of Sydney, they don't.

I thought you said they were an "inner city" team? Having lived in Clovelly for several years, I can tell you that no one there considers themselves as "inner city". That's more towards Glebe, Annandale, Marrickville. So please don't lecture people on who the Swans represent when you can't even work out the geography yourself.

They represent the club and whoever shells out their hard-earned every year to support it, no matter where they live. But you surely would know that as you know everything about "your" club...

Being the first AFL team in Sydney, I tend to think they represent all of Sydney, (as well as South Melbourne), but their spiritual home is the SCG, and always will be. On a trivial note, I like that they train(pre season) at the 'Lake Oval', which for an older South Melbourne fan like myself is a link to their former home ground in Melbourne, the 'Lake Oval', next to Albert Park Lake(home of the F1 GP), which is a nice coincidence.

Is it a coincidence? I always assumed the swans made a genuine play to name the oval the lake as a tribute. It is a nice little touch, just like all the small heritage things the swans do without alienating any fan from both cities.

I didn't know that. I assumed it might also be next to a lake(I don't know Sydney too well!), hence 'Lake Oval', but if what you say is true, well that's nice too.....as you say, a nice touch.

It's pushing things to call the Kippax thing a 'lake' though. It's really a pond. I had always figured that they used the excuse of the nearby pond as a justification to use the Lakeside Oval tag, really intended as a nod to the club's heritage.

For me the Swans have always represented the wider aussie rules supporting community in NSW, including fans in the Hunter and the ACT. I would find it bizzare if over the past 30 years Sydneysiders felt the Swans as the only Sydney team were not accessible because they were based at the SCG.

Yeah, I went and had a look before my previous post. And also checked my belief that the slightly larger puddles of water that punctuate Centennial Park are all called ponds. Not quite sure whoever formed the view that Kippax was a lake!

Kippax Lake is one of Sydney's finest bodies of water. Apparently Victor Trumper hit a six right into the lake once. I wouldn't go in there to retrieve anything nowadays though. It's a great lake and it's perfectly apt for Lakeside Oval to be named thus.

I agree with this.

I live near Liverpool and have been a Swans supporter for many years and a member for the last 11 and I don't consider the Swans as an 'inner city' team.
They are my team no matter where they play.

I live about 5 minutes from ANZ stadium but I don't feel the Swans are leaving me. We are all different.

I live in Canberra which makes ANZ far more convenient to reach by car. But it's just such an unpleasant venue with its midstrength beer, poor sightlines, lack of atmosphere and lack of anything worthwhile around it.

It's a pain to get out of by public transport too, which makes an evening at ANZ a discouraging prospect.

SCG is an easy walk from Central, so it's far better for public transport. And being right next to Surry Hills is just infinitely better than the weird corporate killspace of Olympic Park. And the beer in the Red Zone is way better too.

There will be a few less threads on here next year with no complaining about ANZ.

All stadiums seem to sell mid strength beer at stupid prices these days, thats not exclusive to ANZ.

I think the supply demand curve hit anz sales pretty hard. No risk that it was going to sell out at any time, which ultimately is a shame as it would be good to have the odd 70k plus crowds. Sydney just doesnt support that notion.
