We decided not to use pick 1 for Mills and see where his first bid occurs. Someone then bids pick 4 for Mills.

Can the Swans return the player that they used with pick 1 back into the draft and get pick 1 back. They would then use a proportion of the available pick 1 points to pay the points cost of pick 4.

Is that possible? It could be one of the flaws of live drafting with Academy and Father / Son players.

I don't think so. If we didn't select Mills with pick 1 we have missed out on him. If we did, pick 1 is worth 3000 points and as he is an academy player we would receive a 25% discount. The discount would bring our next pick (it will be 18!) up in draft order by a number of points that correspond to the 25% discount.

So this new academy system could work incredibly well for us is we have some high picks? We could get pick 1, use it on Mills, and then use the discount points to bump up pick 18 which may be enough to get Josh Dunkley. Dunkley is rated at this stage a 10-25 prospect. We then get a 25% father / son discount and bump up the low second round pick.

With great prospects like Mills and Dunkley available it may be a sensible time to trade out established talent if they have any inkling of leaving Sydney.

People say the academy prospects are not as good after Mills. This offseason may be the time to do deals!

It's not that they're not as good, it's just they're not potential top 10 picks at this stage. It's hard to know yet what a 15yo kid is going to do in a year or two let alone 5.

While this is clearly not possible, the question you raise is a good one. If we feel Mills or Dunkley is worth pick 6 (say) and we use pick 1 for someone else, what does that mean in terms of our ability to then draft one (or both) of the other two.

Any talk of trading Hanners is insane and I'd be very surprised if he wanted to go.

Of course if he demanded a transfer and we could get a good trade then we would have to look at it.

He was outstanding tonight, unbelievable running ability. Especially considering he was playing on someone who has really had the wood on him in recent times. Should also be mentioned that Cornes won the Port 3k time trial with a PB so for Dan to burn him the way he did on a few occasions tonight is no easy task.

Hanners is throwing himself into the contests big time - he's providing a great example to his teammates although I fear he'll miss a game or two here and there as a result of his kamikaze play......

I've long time believed Hanners to be our barometer. When he plays well, generally the team functions cohesively. When he's a bit off, or is successfully tagged out of a game, we frequently struggle. He's the perfect blend of a hard running outside footballer (notwithstanding his lack of electric pace) who will also put his head over the ball and scrap with the best of them. Hawthorn knew exactly what they were doing when they singled him out for extreme physical punishment early in the GF.
