So now to win games the swans have to:
    1. Beat the AFL trade ban
    2. Beat the opposition
    3. Beat the umpires
    4. Beat the boundary umpires
    5. Beat the goal umpires
    6. Beat the goal review
    7. Beat the Vic clubs wanting to shut down the academies

Much got made of the goal umpires and rightly so. My issue was more Umpire No.7 Dalgleish. Every 50/50 type decision went the way of Freo especially in the first half, notably a couple of frees against Rampe in front of goal. They were all paid by Dalgleish. So I looked him up. Recruited from Fremantle.

Now I have no problem with any umpire umpiring anywhere. But if they are going to be so transparently one sided, then surely something should be done.

I was seething at the free paid to Fyfe against Rampe. I have no idea where the umpire pulled that one from. And I thought both holding the ball decisions in front of Freo's goal (against Rampe and Shaw) were harsh, though probably not absolutely wrong. But Rampe should have had a free paid against him to Fyfe in the 4th quarter, when he definitely got him high and the umpires let that one go.

If the team had been harder at the ball for longer they would have won that game, so while there were more than a few questionable umpiring games, it was the team that lost the game for themselves by only turning up at half-time.

Thanks Ugg, this is good but wish they had the segment from David King last night available! In that Fox Sports article they didn't show on the first one that the goal umpire initially called a goal until the boundary umpire came in and put in his useless opinion hence changing the mind of said spineless goal umpire!

I agree Liz that those 2 holding the ball free's were probably correct under the letter of the law. And also the the first Rampe call was a joke but the 2nd non call was lucky (one of the few close calls that went our way mind you!) but surely you must agree that those 2 goals that were reversed played a major impact on us not winning as at the time we were flying and had all the momentum!

The result will never change and yes our first half definitely cost us but I still have a bad taste about this one that the umpires played a bigger part than they should have in us losing the game...

No doubt, Liz, and successful sides don't get successful worrying about umpires. And aside from the occasional swear word, I tend not to worry about them either. But it really was constant. By half time I was just thinking "Who is this No.7 and just what is his problem." And to a degree, I think it can have an affect on ball attack. If one side is constantly penalised for their aggression and the other isn't, the result will be that one side is able to play a more aggressive brand of footy. I think Geelong have been beneficiaries of this kind of allowance (albeit not deliberate) for a number of years.

Yeah that one, but on fox last night David King showed the full conversation between the umpires and you can hear the goal umpire first say to the field umpire that he believes it was a GOAL then changes his mind and says touched after the boundary says it too. I didn't think umpires ever changed their minds...

Had that match been umpired fairly we'd have won.

I am not devastated that we lost the game because there were some really encouraging aspects to the game such as Reid, Parker's return to form and sudden realisation of how to avoid the bombing it long folly.

I am more concerned regarding the appearance that the goal review decisions seemed to have an element of orchestration. This is the point that you can take from the Fox Footy analysis. Stuff like that doesn't happen by chance, the odds are astronomical.(BTW its the first time I have ever seen an umpire reverse his call).

My concern is that the game itself and the AFL are in danger of losing credibility in an environment where gambling is making major inroads to the sport.

I don't think the umpiring was that bad. A few 50:50s went against us in the first half, but when you're playing like rubbish, that's what happens. Notice how the decisions started to go our way once we started playing alright?

I thought we really missed Rohan in the first half. His chase and pressure on the ball carrier would have helped us to prevent Freo from moving the ball so freely.

I loved Reid's game, but a team has problems when a back takes a mark and gives the ball to Grundy to use it out of defense. There are not many in our back six who I have a lot of confidence in to use the ball well.

But the turning point was when we started smashing Freo with our tackling at the stoppages.

All in all, I'm satisfied with that performance. I think it showed that we do have a chance against Hawthorn, as long as we keep up the intensity from the start of the game.

I don't know how he could even start to claim that he saw that the ball was touched. Yes you can only see his arm.

Even if he could somehow see the ball, the fact remains that the goal umpire was in the best position and he didn't have any doubts when talking to the umpire
