I read the (extremely nasty) Bolt article and about half the comments underneath before I felt so distressed I thought it was better to stop. One thing that seemed clear to me though is that a lot of his audience feed off him and off others who comment without any knowledge, research or interest in facts. I suspect that a lot of those who commented on this article actually don't follow or know much about AFL. This was just an opportunity to express their bigotry.
As an example, I keep reading 'the haka is ok because it is done before the match and is targeted at the opposing players. Goodes chose instead to "intimidate" the Carlton fans."
Apart from the nonsense about intimidation, aggression etc., there is a practical issue here: in an AFL home & away match the two teams don't actually line up face to face before the match begins. So the haka example was not an option for Adam.

I might seem like a selfish ignorant bastard but all I care about is if he is going to keep building on his improving form next weekend. I must say I am glad we are not playing in Melbourne.

Don't bother. It would just be ruined with footy talk.

I have shifted the posts that predominantly focus on politics and journalism to a separate thread on the Current Affairs forum. Please continue the discussion there. Further posts in this thread that focus on the more general discussion around politics will be deleted.

A number of posts touched on both the Goodes topic and more general politics / journalism. I spent approximately 5 seconds per post deciding whether to leave those here or move them with those that had moved away from the Goodes topic. I can guarantee that some of you will disagree with one or more of those I've either left or moved. C?st la vie!

Wow, everything is disjointed, I'm confused!! No, fair enough, all good. As for this weekend, I hope Adam has an absolute blinder and sticks it up all the haters. BOG, Mark of the round, Goal of the round, 3 Brownlow votes, and begrudging but unavoidable plaudits from Eddie and his cronies on Fox..........too much to ask?????

This is an article on the development of the War Cry that Adam used, with a couple of videos of the Under 15s performing it. The hurling motion at the end is throwing a boomerang not a spear - so all those nervous Carlton fans can relax!

"The War Cry was part of the cultural and leadership development for the Flying Boomerangs, the AFL?s U15 development team. The tour to Papua New Guinea in March 2009 was the first time it was performed. Knowing that the local teams would have a war dance, the Flying Boomerangs developed one to respond appropriately. The team visited a cultural centre in Cairns and learned some dance moves, which they added to, based on their own knowledge."

I'm going to do the war dance in front of the dirty dishes from now on .
Not saying the dirty dishes represent Hawthorn fans that would be awful .

I think it is great that the majority of journos/tv/radio personallioes are still expressing their confusion as to why people are so outraged, and why people boo him.

Last night on Footy Classified Gary Lyon said he thought it was a bit over the top. Wow now we have a politically correct football commentator. The other 3 on the panel thought there was nothing wrong with it or celebrating a goal. Then again McGuire gave Lyon the job on the Footy Show.

I wasn't overly comfortable with this war cry being directed at Carlton supporters for (according to Adam) no particular reason other than respecting some kids.
If Goodes was making a statement, then I'd be OK with it, but he insists it had nothing to do with booing etc.
I'd rather he make some public comments on the booing and this be his 'answer' to it. Then it all fits into place.
As a random act it is a bit weird.
I suppose I lean towards Leigh Matthews comments on the matter, but in the end it's really not a big enough issue to worry about too much...

Yeah, but what if the boomerang hit someone ? lol I was one of the 30,000 who cheered on the night. It looked amazing, he is so athletic and light on his feet.

I have always admired Leigh a lot but he is the reason that racists can rationalise their attacks on Goodes and hide it behind Leigh's statement of what, 10 or 12 years ago, that Adam is a "protected species".
