Wow, the Aamer Rahan article hits where it hurts or should do!!! It is good to see some insightful and important stuff being written to balance the rubbish. Unfortunately not coming from those who dominate the footy media.

I don't watch the Footy Show much but this week am tempted to, to see if the hosts echo the exact same opinions on Adam and 'the dance' as were trotted out last weekend. I suspect that the superficial will prevail, handling the issue in such a way so as to pander to the 'frightened by invisible spears' section of their audience. Here's hoping I am wrong.

So thanks to an Act of Parliament McGuire is now an OBE: Old Boofhead Eddie.

Next he'll be named AOTY for a body of work showing that any idiot can make it to the top the manure heap. His legacy is assured.

I never thought I would be praising the NSW Upper House, but I do today. We should probably thank Eddie for bringing us all closer together ...

And Aamer Rahman's piece is outstanding. Absolutely skewered Bolt, while showing the intricacies of racism.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

We shouldn't expect too much of footy commentators to cope with racism and cultural symbols. McGuire pretty much admitted this morning that he preferred the whole thing written down and explained before the act takes place so he can sound intelligent. Brereton, in his day, would rather actually hit and abuse someone rather than use a pretend spear in a dance! Hall was always someone who preferred his fist to do the talking.

With the NewMatilda piece and NSW upper house are giving some much needed broader insight.

Not sure if anyone has posted what Michael Johnson from Freo had to say. Also, if you follow the link you can watch a video of young players performing the dance at the Indigenous camp in Perth earlier this year.
?I reckon if I was up kicking goals as well, I would have broken out and done the same,? Johnson said.
Johnson said Goodes was a role model for the community and obviously proud of his heritage. "He?s standing tall and proud to be Indigenous,? he said. "It was a fantastic tribute. He?s a quality person and a leader in our community.?

I would have done the same as Goodes - Michael Johnson - fremantlefc.com.au

In a bit of coincidental 'timing' the Canadian Truth and Reconciliation Commission has just found that the Canadian policy toward its Indigenous People to be 'Cultural Genocide.'

There is a discussion of the matter here: "Cultural Genocide": Landmark Report Decries Canada?s Forced Schooling of Indigenous Children | Democracy Now!

There are so many similarities between the treatment of Native Peoples in both Australia and Canada, as well as the continuing deprivations in the respective indigenous communities.

The measured and passive actions by Adam Goodes should be unequivocally applauded by all Australians. In comparison to the atrocities committed against his people the protestations are very modest.
                        ......

And as for Eddie McGuire, he now has quite a resume of racial insensitivity (and I am being kind by using this word). The disgraceful Nicky Winmar Footy Show spoof should have been enough to put the show permanently off the air and those that participated in the skit, which Eddie played a major role, given lifetime bans from footy. You really have to wonder when enough is enough. Why are we discussing whether Adam Goodes' goal celebration should be tolerated when the real question is how long the AFL will tolerate racism from high profile media personalities that encourage fans into racial abuse.

Charlie Pickering on The Weekly on ABC absolutely nailed it last night - his piece on the whole thing was brilliant and worth looking up - it's on their Facebook page..

Yes, I enjoyed the Charlie Pickering segment.
And just as an aside: has anyone in the media bothered asking Carlton why they didn't wear an indigenous jumper for indigenous round? Did they not get the memo? Was it a deliberate snub? Were they too busy sacking their coach to worry about such things? Or were they wearing a really subtle navy blue on navy blue design that nobody noticed?

They did wear one. It was just hard to see against the Navy blue.
