A betting website I've never heard of has run the story.
The End for Lance 'Buddy' Franklin?Betswaps.com

As it has not been picked up by any other more "reliable" new source, I suspect it is BS and they are just trying to generate some hits/traffic for their site.

It was on Fox Footy?s AFL360 program. Here's a newspaper article about it:

'AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan is adamant there is nothing more to Lance ?Buddy? Franklin?s medical problems than what has been made public.'
'McLachlan was asked on Wednesday night if he was confident that the Swans? explanation about Franklin could be taken at face value. ?Yes, 100 per cent,? he told Fox Footy?s AFL360 program."'

Another reason to be confident the AFL is not covering up a 'third strike' is that Buddy was used (by pre-recorded video) to introduce the Brownlow count for the Indigenous round on Monday night. To me that indicated the AFL's support for Franklin.

The article headline states that Franklin is Contemplating retirement.

If Buddy is suffering from depression, which has been intimated, then I would have little doubt that he would have been contemplating retirement, and perhaps a lot worse. That's just a feature of the illness. The question is just whether it is a temporary condition or a permanent state of mind. He must certainly be getting the best available treatment that would give him every chance of getting back to his best. Once he's better, he'll probably joke about how he ever had such thoughts.

I wonder if this is a consequence of the racial villification of Goodes. Franklin would be feeling it too. And goodes considered retiring earlier due to the impact on the swans ( read franklin?)

Yeah your probably laughing, but sometimes these guys are onto things, ive seen it many many times before.
Many people on there saying Franklin has had 3 strikes for illicit drugs and this is just a smoke screen. - I don't believe that though.
              Lets hope its all bull@@@@.
I looked at the page some of the comments... interesting.
If Mitch Morton can play through it Buddy can as well

I wish it was a 3rd strike. At least you'll know he can come back.

But to miss a finals series when you are top four and a really good chance is very serious. Its not far away from full retirement.

Has Buddy been seen in public anywhere since his mental health issue was announced ?

Even if it is addiction or partly addiction that's a serious mental health issue too, and warrants the same treatment and caution as any other. Drug and alcohol addiction can happen to the best of us and can be debilitating.

Screw you if your compassion is provisional on your own judgemental moralism about somebody else's battles.

According to New Idea(!) Not the most reputable of sources.
"The Sydney Swans player is said to be in a five-week, doctor-supervised program at a private hospital near Wollongong, which specialises in mental health, alcohol withdrawal and addiction recovery."

Bear in mind that New Idea is a glossy publication which specialises in celebrity gossip, inconsequential fluff and making things up. This report has all the credibility of a BigFooty rumour.
