After reading some of the previous posts I have a general question to the Melbourne/Victorian based supporters - who are the worst and most vile of the opposition supporters? I appreciate the passion that supporters have for their teams but surely there must be a certain amount of civility and downright decency or I am too naive in the understanding of the supporters there?

As a general rule the teams with the worst supporters tend to be the ones with the most supporters. It must be human nature to behave like a tool when you have safety in numbers. One exception would be the St.Kilda supporters who have been terrible for as long as I can remember. Even going back to the Lakeside Oval days. The Norf supporters (not the club itself or it's players) are usually fairly well behaved. Richmond supporters are usually pretty good given their large support base. The funny thing about Richmond is they tend to turn on themselves more so that the opposition.

I used to work at VFL Park and even when the Hawks weren't playing finals their supporters were always @@@@e. Cats supporters are usually okay and the other big three clubs (Essendon, Collingwood and Carlton) are just feral.

There is definitely "a certain amount of civility and downright decency". For the most part, in over 50 years of attending the footy in Melbourne and Geelong, I've rarely had a problem. The racism directed at Adam Goodes was probably the worst thing I have seen, but it was pretty much across all clubs. Hawthorn does have that self-entitled, private school, Hooray Henry element, but most of them are OK. Collingwood and Richmond are a bit of an exception, but mostly that's just a class thing. Bogans will be bogans. Essendon and Carlton supporters used to have that "we're entitled to get every free and win every game" attitude, but they've been chastened a bit by the experience of the last decade (and not before time). Geelong people are just odd. Last week I saw a Swans supporter leaving the Richmond game spitting vitriol at our players, at maximum volume, and punching the walls as he went. So every team has got them.

There will always be the odd idiot here and there, but on the whole, footy supporters are just footy supporters.

I'm heading down to the Geelong game on July 8th, and will be sitting in the members area with my daughter and her boyfriend (a mad Cat fan/member). Do you think I should I wear my full on 'red and white' regalia??? ( a rose amongst the violets!!)

Just on Sam Mitchell, A radio caller phoned SEN radio to complain why Sam Mitchell was not reported for Giving a elbow straight to Hannebury's throat.
I did not see the incident. Does anyone know when it occurred?

I called in this morning. I'm sick of Mitchell, the hawk version,getting a free pass to do as he wishes. The incident was dismissed by most commentators because it wasn't "serious" but from what I saw it looked like an elbow to the throat.

I'm old enough to remember an incident when Gareth John, swans player in a different decade was accidentally elbowed in the throat. He never played another game and was permanently and severely affected by the injuries he sustained.

No blow to the throat is trivial and it was clearly intentional. As usual Teflon Mitchell survives censure.

I know: I'm really over it too. It seems that every second week, there's some act of petty thuggery, and the result is that it is either ignored completely by the powers that be, or he gets a slap on the wrist.

Well, something has come of all this. Callum Sinclair has been charged for rough conduct against Sam Mitchell and can accept $1000 fine.

You shouldn't have called to complain about Sam. You can expect the police to come around your home soon and charge you with vilification of a venerated Hawthorn player. You'll be lucky if you don't serve prison time (probably forced to share a cell with Collingwood fans).

Sinclair was fined for engaging in rough conduct against Mitchell. If I recall correctly wasn't Sinclair retaliating against the Twerp?

And just to add a further level of strangeness to Mitchell's non charge, Sinclair has been fined a grand for rough conduct towards Mitchell!?? Did anyone see this? It wasn't when they were both going for the ball and Sinclair's head went reeling back, was it?

Just to show how bias the Melbourne Media is... They just happen to mention why the umpires were so silly and could not spot the two frees for Hawthorn in the 3rd quarter for tripping. Did not mention anything about the Mitchell Throat push or the Buddy 2nd quarter trip!! argghhh.

If you mean the Mitchell hit on Hanners, they did pay a free - but then paid advantage when there was clearly no advantage, and nailed Laidler for HTB off one step. The umpiring was poor for most of the evening but we had our fair share of shockers that went our way.
