Rnd 9 Match Day Thread. Hawthorn V Sydney. MCG. 19.50 pm.

Mchack is a nickname i saw first here at RWO.not by me. It was typical RWO in that he was a young player having trouble finding his feet at AFL level. Much like towers, hiscox, etc. As you may have noticed i don't buy into the bullying of young vunerable players, but established players are fair game. It s hypocritical for some on here to have outrage at mchack while chastising towers and hiscox. All of which are playing at or about the same level. However the younger ones have the upside of youth and improvement.

Macca is fair game for criticism if he is not playing well and doing our team a disservice. There is no need to call him McHack though.

Really? Our defence has been strong pretty much all year. Friday night they got back to their best after a drop in the Tiggers game.

I meant overall for the whole year thus far our defense has improved.

How are the Hawks underdone? Not being a smartarse, just wondering why you think that nine rounds into the season.

Hodge and Roughead are missing (Key players). Rioli was rushed back into the side after experiencing family problems in NT (Another key player). Roughead's condition may have left a flat feeling among the playing group. I think Hodge is #freekickhawthorn most important (scumbag/sniper/asshole) player. Each time he plays against us we lose for some bizarre reason. Fairly sure each time he's missed a game against us since 2012 we've won. Don't underestimate his importance to their team.


Most importantly: history has shown us that Hawthorn have slow starts to the year and begin accelerating their effort towards the middle of the year.

Doesn't anyone remember 2014 and 2015? We beat Hawthorn both times in our first game against them with Hodge missing. Then with the return leg, we lost the following game against them later in the year.

I fear that if we take them lightly, history will repeat itself and we'll be humiliated yet again.

Hope like hell I'm wrong but it all seems eerily familiar. It's an awful pattern.

The swans will have to be totally brutal against them at the SCG in round 17. We need heaps more improvement.

They have Roughead and Hodge to come back into the side... we only have Reid.

I don't care what anyone says about Hawthorn being too old and slow. They've only lost 3 games this year and almost pipped us. They're far from a side 'rebuilding.' Won't be satisfied until we trounce/humiliate them.

Some good points, but I would be totally stunned if Roughead comes back this season.

I agree with this.

I have been critical of McVeigh, but if you read my posts, you won't see McHack written.
Also, I haven't called for him to be dropped - just monitoring his games.
I hope he comes good, but it's looking less likely as each week goes by...

A lot of positives out of Friday.
Not the least that Buddy is a freak.

I thought Reg played one of his best games for a long while. Very calm and composed.
Early in the 2nd term he shoved a player out of the way with his hands and took the mark. Last week he did a similar thing with his body, no hands, and got pinged. I was bemused.

But the calmest of the lot was young George.
How good is this bloke? Probably his best game. A couple of times he had the ball in heavy traffic and managed to think his way through it and come out unscathed.
Very impressed with his game.

Oh and Hawks supporters are sooks.
- 3 Strikes.
- COLA.
- Cheats.
- on and on it went.
Even the pie supporter in front of me was horrified by their behaviour.
And that was in the MCC Reserve.

I christened him Mchack... with good cause. When he's hot, he's on fire... when he's not, he's Mchack.

There is a common scenario for tier 2 players like McVeigh, etc. All players peak in ability at 27 and 28 years of age. Matured mentally, while still physically strong.
While the Buddies of the world, start good and stay good for 10 years. Lesser skilled players are weak early, then hit a purple patch in the late 20's, then hit a cliff pretty soon after.

McVeigh has had a good 4 years, but the tell-tale sign that the cliff is coming is that he was called mchack early on.

Towers is 26. He is almost already in his peak, but still a fringe player. This is a worry, but I think the swans will give him a 2 year extension which will get him into his peak years, and hope that he improves the 10-15% to be a regular, if not spectacular, player. However, very likely after 2 years he'll be done.

Yes, I was also particularly impressed with Hewett on Friday night, especially how he calmly moved through the pressure applied by the reigning premiers in a high stakes game. Hopefully, we have on our hands someone who will develop into a ball distributor in the Sam Mitchell mode (but without the psychopathy).

I had a typical feral Hawthorn supporter sitting in front of me. He spent the whole game whining about the umpires. When Rohan was penalised for deliberate right in front of us I went postal. He proceeded to laugh and say that's what the hawks had been copping all night. I couldn't be bothered responding but then not long after he asked if paying Buddy $10 million was worth it and said that all the swans did is buy players from other clubs...pointing out Buddy, Tippett and McGlynn. Then the best thing happened in the next bit of play for the hawks when the ball went from Frawley (Demons), to Gibson (North Melbourne), to Burgoyne (Port Adelaide), to Gunston (Adelaide). My brother and I happily called out those team names as each player got the ball. He certainly stayed quiet after that and left with his tail between his legs when the siren went!

Nice work mel. They are an ignorant bunch at the best of time - at least he stayed quiet and wasn't one of the abusive bunch that I've had the unfortunate occasion to run into in recent years in Melbourne.

In BM's defence, he's a genuine bloke who is really passionate about AFL and sport in general. Take time to read his back story, watch an interview with the guy, and all of this will come into context.

I have nothing against Bruce as a guy - seems a really genuine person who is clearly passionate about sport. But as a commentator, he is nauseating, and the man love, in particular for 'cyrrrrrilllllll' is a bit beyond the pale for my liking.

Highly entertaining talent.

Seems like the sort of middle aged guy who would have a plethora of funny onfield and off field stories. Would love to have a beer with BT and hear some stories.

BT is a woeful commentator - again, like Bruce, I'm sure he's a nice gyt, but a talented commentator he is not.

No commentator in the AFL these doays comes close to the late Clynton Grybas for mine - now there was a guy that really had 'talent'. Gone far too soon, and his radio commentary of the Nick Davis 2005 SF is even better than the Channel Ten commentary/Fox (can't remember who it actually was) of the same game in my opinion.

It was also Sam Mitchell that hit Tommy in I think the third quarter that had him doubled over on our half backline at the time I thought he would get two weeks for it but no not even reported.

I've never rated Eddie as a commentator. As much as they try, Dermie and Eddie can't match the banter of BT, Darrrrrce and Riiiicho.

Love BT. I can picture him being amazing on a pub crawl or a bucks party. How many beers would it take for the "Oh Boy" , "Wow Wee" to come out.

I love his banter and how excited he gets at certain moments of games. He must smash a couple of Red Bulls a game to keep that excitement so high.

Agree on Clinton Grybas. Great commentator. I used to enjoy his show " White Line Fever". It used to be followed by the footballers wife show, which used to be funny.

I used to like Robert Walls as a commentator. He was tough, uncompromising and had no time for the bull crap that has crept into the game. Imagine Robert Walls letting loose on Cam McCarthy for homesickness. Wallsy is so tough that he could join SAMCRO.

Yes Bruce is annoying with his little phrases and words but I find him the least biased of them all. But I think supporters from all clubs are a bit precious when it comes to commentators. So many think they hate their clubs. Quite often it is the excitement of the game that. I don't see Dunstall as biased, other do, but it is Brereton who takes the cake with everything Hawthorn bias. And he was apparently complaining about umpire Schmidt in a derogatory manner during a break in the game. I hope the AFL bring him to heel for that. A flog of the highest order.
