You would suspect an unwritten rule amongst the academy clubs not to bid on each other's players

Especially after last draft issues

I dunno, I think that all things being equal that an academy club would pass on a fellow academy player but I do think we should respect the integrity of the draft (I know, I know, a ridiculous idealistic notion after the way the Hawks gamed the system this year). Clubs really should produce a pure bidding list (like internally within the club) and bid accordingly.

The bidding system cannot work if clubs don't make bids so that should include fellow academy clubs but I think they need to be objective and not vindictive. I think that GWS really nailed the issue once it started to bubble about the Bombers bidding for the GWS kids and I think that the Bombers would be very very unwise indeed to contemplate bidding on Setterfield as I reckon GWS would pass for sure. Bowes will be more problematic for GCS and I have a feeling they might bid for Bowes at #1.

If we had Pick 10 and bud on it for Perryman (provided we are genuinely happy to take him) I don't think GWS would be at all put out by that. Having said that I don't think he has the run and carry we need

Gold Coast have traded in two mids and they'll take Bowes and Scheer at the ND. Surely they wouldn't think of bringing in seven midfielders into the squad? Agree though that the Suns will hold the key as to who we select.

Lyons and Hanley are both outside players. What they need are a few inside contested ball winners. They will get Bowes and Scheer, as you say, but they can still use a couple more. I forgot to mention that GC also have a very highly rated academy ruckman (Crosley, I think) who will also be available next draft. GC have the makings of a very good team if they get their administration and football department in order. The players they've lost could make up a to 8 side.

Richards was getting a run in the team as it stood.
I know players coming back may keep him out, but he's versatile and may work his way back in, or come in again due to injuries.
May be worth it for both the Swans and him to take a 1 year deal.
May fill a gap for us, and if he still wants to go/we need him to go at the end of 2017 he may be worth more.

I'd be keeping Towers if we can, but I know many here will be happy top see him go (mainly based on a couple of late kicks)

I just can't see how we will manage our numbers with both Xav and Deano on the list. If Hiscox was delisted then that would be six out. We've upgraded two and you'd think we should upgrade Marsh but maybe not given he has AJ's slot for the first half of the year. Maybe we can expand the list to 39 or even 40 (if we have to take Brown in the ND) given we have so many cheapies.

No way would Xav cop being demoted to the rookie list so I guess he really needs to decide how important being a league footballer is to him given he has played in an AFL Grand Final already. He seems a thoughtful deep thinking sort of bloke and it wouldn't totally surprise me to see him go back home and go to Uni. Despite the fact I'd like him on our list as cover I just can't see any other club quite having a need for him.

I think that the Suns traded very well and I don't think it would take a lot for them to challenge for the 8 next year. I don't follow their academy fortunes but it is good that they are starting to develop some young lads via the academy as they really need that to work

Re Taranto vs Logue

I've been thinking more and more this one

I think that Davis can in 2018 play a role similar to Grundy if needed 2018 onwards

I don't see a role for logue in 2017

AA is better then logue

Abe Davis is Similar build and similar strengths to Grundy at the same age if not Bette and it is more of a lock down role and fairly easy kicking on our transition so not a highly skilled tall is needed

AA and Rampe playing more our attacking tall roles

Obviously heeney will be in the midfield quite a bit in 2017 which replaces Mitchell's role

Mills should also move at least 50% of his time into the midfield

Taranto would almost be ready immediately I think to play off HBF and our attack off the HB line is critical to match it with the likes of GWS and Doggies in 2017

On that basis I think we should go with Taranto or similar midfielder as a our no9 pick for max impact in 2017

We are in a premiership window right now which also affects our drafting decisions

Logue sounds like a good prospect, and let's not fotget we'll be losing Reg in a coupe of years so we need an A grader to take his place.

There's always a player that make a giant leap up the ND ratings late in the season and I just have a feeling Logue may be gone by our pick 9

Xav has been busting his chops in the twos for four years on roughly $55,000 a season.

If he finally breaks through and plays an AFL Grand Final and then is offered a minor contract (say $100,000 plus match payments, and yes I know that many 23 year olds would like that salary) then he may just question if the risk-reward is sufficient re all the other sacrifices he is making. Then again, I just feel he'd think he hasn't really found our how good he can be.

With Tom and Dean unsigned and with the money left over from Tom M, I just have a feeling that expanding pour list from 38 to 40 may be the only way we can accommodate both players but I suspect the offers are way below what many of us on here would imagine them to be.

Here are the combine results. I've highlighted a few of the names that have been spoken about here. I would say that Berry and Logue were the best overall performers at the combine. They both have pace and endurance. Gallucci also did quite well as did SPP. Sometimes you get players who do well in the combine, but are not good footballers, but these guys can all play the game.

We can be almost 100% certain that at least one of Logue, Berry and Taranto will be available at our first pick. Taranto is probably the most skillful footballer of the 3, but both Logue and Berry are super competitive and I know that's a trait we look for in drafting. It's hard to make a mistake with these choices.

I don't agree with Reid coming straight back in at the expense of X (if he's with us next year). X had his first real taste of senior footy last year, I would think the spot is his to lose. If Reid can come back to rotate between forward and pinch hitting in the ruck there could be a place for both

Being thinking about this too.

Most people are expecting Freo to bid for English or Setterfield because they are WA boys.

But they have recruited really well in the Trade Period and may decided they don't need a rookie ruckman or another mid.

All their recruits are WA boys, and so is Logue.

Next draft is very strong also, but mostly in mids.

If he is not there, then we should just go for another world class mid; Tarranto, Brodie, or Florent.

I don't think the salary cap issues are just because of Franklin or Tipppet.

I am guessing we structure our salary cap so that our top 10/18 get paid most of it. And then we use cheaper fringe and developing players for depth.

Players like Parker. Hannebery and Kennedy would be high profile star players at any other club. But we have a group of them as well as talented young players emerging. Having a core of elite players may come at the cost of depth.

Setterfield is a GWS academy player and likely to go in the top 5 or t0.

Freo did recruit well. They gained an outside mid in Hill, but the focus was on KPPs. They got 2 forwards in McCarthy and Kersten, and picked up Joel Hamling from the WB. They have reasonable depth in defense now, and if Michael Johnson is fit and going, some good quality as well. That's one reason for not taking Logue.

They have a serious deficiency in the ruck with Sandilands surly going into his last season at 34 yo. Their other 2 ruckmen, Clarke and Griffin are not thought of highly and can't string games together. Clarke is a free agent, but had no takers.

I'm not a big fan of English, but the draft watchers rate him highly. I see him as Freo's main target in the draft. The Freo game plan is set up to have a dominant ruckman.
